Your Best Free Racing Tips For The Prince Of Wales Stakes
Published on 09/07/15
The Group-2 Prince of Wales Stakes is a 12-furlong race open to horses 3-years-old and above, and there are some interesting statistics.
The last 10 renewals have been won by six 4-year-olds, two 6-year-olds, one 8-year-old and one 3-year-old. Sir Michael Stoute has also trained the winner of 5 of those 10 renewals, whilst jockey Ryan Moore has ridden Stoute’s last 4 winners.
This year, 8 runners are set to go to post for what should be a fascinating contest, and here is our analysis and our big-race free tip.
Won all 4 of his races up to 10-furlongs and, though he’ll have to prove his stamina over this longer trip, he’s looked like he needed it in all his runs so far. He’s not run at Newmarket before, though his trainer John Gosden has won the race once in the last decade. Gosden has had 5 winners from his last 13 runners.
Gospel Choir 4/1
Trained by Michael Stoute and set to be ridden by Ryan Moore, the 6-year-old has won both his starts over course and distance. He beat Pethers Moon here last year, and that looks pretty decent form after that horse went on to win the Coronation Stakes this year. Stoute has had 2 winners from his last 7 runners.
Second Step 9/2
Has to concede 3lb to all his rivals here, but beat Telescope (neck) and Pethers Moon (18 lengths) on his only course and distance start in May. That small field form is hard to weigh-up, but it could be Luca Cumani’s horse has improved markedly this year. Stable has had 3 winners from last 6 runners.
Honourable servant to the Stoute stable, and has run some terrific races including when second in this last year to Pethers Moon. Places more than wins though, and Ryan Moore prefers Gospel Choir.
Won only course and distance start, but that ½ length defeat of Gatewood leaves him with plenty to find with some of the others, especially Gospel Choir.
Roger Varian’s charge won his last race, but even that form leaves with loads to find with the principles.
Useful handicapper who finished just two lengths (giving 2lb) to Mahsoob at Royal Ascot. Appeared to lack the necessary stamina on his only previous run at this trip.
Big Orange 40/1
The rightful outsider as he would ideally like an extra furlong or two, and will probably find himself outpaced against speedier rivals.
Racing Tips For Today
Mahsoob is impossible to dismiss but, as he looks too short a price, I’d much rather take him on with Gospel Choir who has course and distance form and is in the hands of a trainer who targets this race.
