Who’ll Win The 2017 FA Cup?

January 6, 2017

The FA Cup welcomes in the Premier League teams this weekend, so there’s no better time to have a bet on who’ll lift the prestigious trophy in May.

If you usually go for an outsider like 2013 winners Wigan or 2008 Portsmouth – then good luck to you! However, the statistics say that 18 of the last 20 FA Cups have been won by either Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City or Manchester United and, with the big-5 all playing better than in the last few seasons, you’d be brave to gamble against one of them winning it. Therefore, it’s time to take a look at their respective chances.

Arsenal

The joint all-time most winners of the FA Cup with 12 wins, Arsenal have won it 6 times in the last 20 years, with victories in 2015, 2014, 2005, 2003, 2002 and 1998. Currently fifth in the Premier League, they’ve suffered just 3 defeats so far, but recent losses to Everton and Southampton suggest they could be vulnerable to a mid-table team. However, the only big-5 team to defeat them so far this season is Liverpool.

Chelsea

Chelsea have lifted the FA Cup 7 times in their history, but 6 of those have been in the last 20 years, with victories in 2012, 2010, 2009, 2007, 2000 and 1997. If you believe in patterns – then you’ve probably already noticed they won in 1997 and 2007… so could it be 2017 as well? They’re also 5-points clear at the top of the Premier League but, whilst their record suggests they will probably have no problem beating the lesser teams, they have lost to Tottenham, Liverpool and Arsenal in the League this season.

Liverpool

Liverpool have also won the FA Cup 7 times, but only twice in the last 20-years, being victorious in 2001 and 2006. Current manager Jurgen Klopp likes a good Cup-Run though and, despite slip-ups against lowly Burnley and Bournemouth this season, their record against the Premier League form sides has been excellent. They’ve beaten Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea, and drawn against Tottenham and Manchester United.

Manchester City

City have won just 5 FA Cups, and their 2011 win is their only one in the last 20-years. They also look to have the Champions League as their main priority this season, and have already been beaten by Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United, as well as Leicester.

Manchester United

Joint all-time most winners with Arsenal with 12 wins, Manchester United are the current holders, as well as winning it twice more in the last 20-years in 2004 and 1999. Jose Mourinho’s side have also found the winning habit of late, and they’re now unbeaten in their last 13 games in all competitions. They still have an outside chance in the Premier League if they can maintain their current form but, with no Champions League to play for, the FA Cup may well present their best chance of success this season.

2017 FA Cup Summary

Manchester City look the least likely winners of the Big-5, whilst the fact Chelsea have lost 3 matches to their biggest rivals this season suggests they may be vulnerable in the latter stages, whilst Arsenal are also looking slightly vulnerable with their recent defeats by Everton and Southampton. Therefore, I’m happy to take Liverpool and Manchester United against the field, as Klopp seems to be the master at not losing games against his biggest rivals, whilst Manchester United look hard to beat in their current mood.
