2020 Kentucky Derby Recap & Preakness Stakes Preview
With the results of the 2020 Kentucky Derby now in the record books, we can look ahead to this year’s final jewel of the Triple Crown which will take place on Saturday, October 3rd – The Preakness Stakes.
NBC Sports, which broadcast the Kentucky Derby announced that this year’s Kentucky Derby was the most-watched sporting event on Labor Day Weekend since 2017 and the most-watched sporting event since the Super Bowl. The winner of the Kentucky Derby – Authentic, as well as the winner of the Belmont Stakes and Kentucky Derby second-place-finisher, Tiz the Law are both being considered for the Preakness which would be an epic showdown.
A few key runners who scratched in the days leading up to the Derby are preparing to contest the Preakness Stakes. Art Collector, the likely second-choice for the Derby before scratching a few days prior will be entered as will Tampa Bay Derby winner, King Guillermo. Thousand Words, who was uninjured when he flipped in the paddock about twenty minutes prior to the Kentucky Derby will also be considered. Mystic Guide won the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga this past Saturday and Happy Saver who won the traditional prep race for the Preakness, the Federico Tesio Stakes this past Saturday are a few new faces who will likely join the mix.
So once again, it looks like we’ll have a full field for this Triple Crown race. From an odds standpoint, this race could offer the most value with the 1-2 finishers in the Kentucky Derby wheeling back on short rest. Horses like Art Collector and King Guillermo may be fresher and will likely offer more value. We’re still a few weeks away and a lot can happen between now and then.
