Un De Sceaux Makes Me Tingle

Un De Sceaux Makes Me Tingle

The Tingle Creek Chase (Saturday 3pm) is the second most prestigious 2-mile chase in Britain after the Queen Mother Champion Chase, and many Champion Chasers have also been successful in it including Sprinter Sacre, Sire de Grugy, Sizing Europe, Master Minded, Moscow flyer, Flagship Uberalles and Viking Flagship.

Established in 1979, the race is names after Tingle Creek, one of the most popular chases of the 1970’s. And a horse who has an exemplary record over the tricky Sandown fences. There are 13 of those fences to be humped during the race, which is run over 2-miles.

The winners in the last decade have been aged 5 to 9, and only the mighty Moscow Flyer has won the race at the age of 10. Paul Nicholls has trained 7 of the last 11 renewals, whilst jockey Ruby Walsh has ridden 3 of the last 13 winners. Meanwhile, trainer Gary Moore and son Jamie Moore have teamed-up with Sire de Grugy to win 2 of the last 3 renewals.

6 Runners are set to line-up for the 2016 Tingle Creek Chase

Ar Mad

2 from 2 at Sandown including being a shock winner of the 2015 Henry VIII Novices Chase. However, he beat stayers there, and even his defeat of Vaniteaux leaves him with plenty to find with stablemate Sire De Grugy. Also off since February, and has yet to win on his seasonal debut, though has the right to improve plenty as a 6-year-old.

Gods Own

Proved better in the spring in the last couple of years, and the form of his defeat of Vautour at Punchestown would put him in the firing line. Not at his best in two previous runs in December though, including in the 2014 renewal of this race. Stable is in great form though.

Sire De Grugy

The 2013 and 2015 winner is 4 from 5 over fences at Sandown, and only lost his 100% record in April in the Celebration Chase. Already proven he’s in decent nick this year with a handicap win off 160, though is 0 from 3 against Un De Sceaux. Also bids to become only the second 10-year-old to win.

Sir Valentine

Surprise winner of the Haldon Gold Cup,  but he only had 10-8 there, and carrying level-weights against these high-class horse should be too big an ask.

Un De Sceaux

Traded odds-on for the Champion Chase for much of last season, but found Sprinter Sacre too good there and again in the Celebration Chase. However, he finished well in-front of Sire De Grugy on the 3 occasions they met last season, and should win if at his best. Negatives are that he has fallen on his last two seasonal debuts.

Vibrato Valtat

Trained by Paul Nicholls, but continues to prove hard to place, as he’s not yet up to this grade (third last year), and hard to see him winning unless the principals underperform.

2016 Tingle Creek Chase Tip

Un De Sceaux has the beating of Sire De Grugy on several pieces of form from last season, and he looks a big price considering how short he was sent off for the 2016 Champion Chase. The only negative is he’s fallen on his last 2 seasonal debuts and, if he doesn’t complete, Sire De Grugy may well win the race for a third time.
