Zetland Gold Cup Preview

The Zetland Gold Cup (Redcar, 3.25pm) is the highlight of the Bank Holiday racing, and is a 10-furlong class-2 handicap run over 10-furlongs. It was first run in 1988, with 6 of the last 10 winners aged four, whilst David Barron has trained two winners in the last decade. Meanwhile, 7 of the last 10 winners have carried between 8-9 and 9-4.

14 runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Zetland Gold Cup.

His jockey’s 5lb claim means he runs off his last winning mark of 99 here, however he’d probably prefer the ground to have a bit of cut in it.

Now 1lb lower than his last winning mark, but ran appallingly last time at York when he should have done better. Bound to return to form at some point, but would take a leap of faith to back him here.

Stable won this last year with an experienced 4-y-o, but he’s 4lb higher than his last win in a tougher race, and has been beaten off lower marks several times.

Hit The Jackpot

3lb higher than when winning 2 starts back under today’s jockey, and yet to really convince he can cut it at class-2 level.

Five-time all-weather winner, but has yet to win on turf. Also struggled in Meydan at the beginning of the year, and is 4lb higher than last winning mark.

Interesting French import who is potentially well-handicapped after a couple of wins and a fourth in a Listed Race.

English Summer

Won four of his last 6 races last season, the last off a 1lb higher mark, but not up to this class on past evidence.

4lb higher than last win and probably still improving, but might well prefer a bit of juice in the ground judging on his last two wins.

Winter House

Open to the most improvement after just two runs, though the form of his two runs hasn’t been franked much since. Wears first-time cheek-pieces.

Central Square

Ran well to be second to Koora on debut, and that filly is now rated 107. However, flopped next time at odds-on. Won on return at Windsor, and another with room for loads of improvement.

Rated 100 after a couple of wins for John Gosden, but slipped down the weights without winning since. Best race two starts ago came on soft ground.

Dance King

Won off 81 in class-4, and 85 in class-3, but flopped in class-2 in between.

Swift Emperor

The only course winner in the field, but looks a doubtful stayer upped in trip, and off a 4lb higher mark than last win.

Two wins in France were followed by two hurdle runs. Last behind Dance King last time, but not without a chance on his penultimate run when second at Pontefract.

Zetland Gold Cup Summary

This is a trappy little handicap, with the lightly-raced –year-olds Eternal, Winter House and Central Square all open to lots of improvement. Of the three, Central House look to have fared best in the draw, and is a tentative selection.
