Who’s Hot! Who’s Not! – Cheltenham Trainers Guide

As we prepare ourselves for the Cheltenham Festival, one of the most important weeks of the year for any tipster or punter, it’s well worth having a look at which trainers are on fire coming into this week, and which are as cold as ice.

3 winners from 10 runners in February, but 0 from 4 in March, and that has to be a slight concern for supporters of the Barters Hill in the Albert Bartlett.

Had a quiet year by his standards, and only 1 from 10 in March, but it wouldn’t be the first time he came alive at the festival, especially if good ground prevails.

The bookies will be praying that the Mullins stable get struck down with a virus, but showing no worrying signs with 4 winners from 12 runners in March.

Gordon Elliott

Expected to post one of the biggest challenges to Willie Mullins for the Top Festival Trainer accolade, and 5 winners from 22 runners in March suggests he’s in the form to do so.

Kim Bailey

Gold Cup and Champion Hurdle winning trainer is 4 from 17 in March, though was 0 from 6 last week.

Dan Skelton

Stable 0 from 21 in March, with lots of short-priced runners beaten, and that has to be a big worry for a young trainer of whom big things are expected.

David Pipe

7 from 28 in March, and the fact quirky stable stalwart Gevrey Chambertin went sweetly at Carlisle last week suggests the Pipe runners may go well this week.

A J Martin

Trained a few festival winners in recent years, but stable continues to struggle for winners, and is 0 from 14 in March.

Retiring at the end of the season, and 0 from 3 in March.

Dermot Weld

Master target trainer hasn’t had loads of Cheltenham winners, but has a few interesting runners this year, and is 2 from 5 in March.

H. De Bromhead

Stable’s horses often go well at the festival, and 2 winners from last 9 runners suggest they could be ready to rumble again.

A. King

Had a great season, but backers of Smad Place and Yarnworth will be worried by a tally of just 1 winner from the last 17 stable runners.

V. Williams

Stable have landed a few nice wins at the festival in recent years, and 5 winners from their last 18 runners means this year’s raiding party must be respected.

N. Mullholland

Stable won with the impressive Druids Nephew last year and, with 5 winners from 9 runners this week, they may well be amongst the winners again this week.

P. Hobbs

Had a brilliant start to the season and, with 3 winners from last 13 runners this month, the stable will be disappointed not to get on the scoresheet this week.

R. Curtis

Stable not had the best of seasons but they certainly no how to hit the target at the festival, and interesting that 2 of their last 4 runners this week have won.

N. Twiston-Davies

Local trainers loves having festival winners, and 3 of his last 9 runners have won, including winning the Imperial Cup.

J. O’Neill

Wouldn’t be the first time the stable have had festival winners despite seemingly out of form, but 0 from 13 in March still tempers enthusiasm.

C. Tizzard

Looks to have his best chances of some big festival winners, and 2 winners from his last 4 runners will have boosted confidence further.

Been in form for most of the season, and 4 winners from last 9 runners suggests he might at least go close to a festival winner.

Won last year’s World Hurdle, and 2 winners from 4 runners this weeks suggests they may be peaking at the right time.

4 winners from 18 runners in March, and La Prezien and Sametegal were both impressive winners of big targets.

5 of last 17 runners have won, and stable will be hopeful of getting on the festival scoresheet.

Stable doesn’t have many high-profile runners, but 1 winner from last 7 runners gives hope for stable star camping Ground in the Champion Hurdle.

Small stable has some decent horses, and they’re currently in red hot form with 6 winners from last 14 runners.

Not the Irish Powerhouse that he used to be, but stable in form with 4 winners from last 15 runners.

Hot or Not

Trainers who’ll be hoping to end their cold spells this week will be Dan Skelton, Alan King, Ben Pauling, Nicky Henderson and Jonjo O’Neill, whilst the big stables of Mullins, Elliott, Nicholls, Hobbs, Tizzard and Pipe all look sure to go well this week. However, three smaller stables who could be peaking perfectly are those of Neil Mulholland, Rebecca Curtis and Warren Greatrex – and their runners looks well worth keeping an eye on this week.

  1. NAP of the meeting, this is a must for me in all combinations. No doubt 7/4 come raceday. ROAD TO RICHES Thursday, RYANAIR, Sponser picks up his own money(again), Expect him to run these ragged from the front on what will be fresh fast ground come Thursday. 2miles 5 on good/soft. 3/1 or biger today. It wont go for the Gold Cup, owner will dictate that. A Banker for me from a yard in cracking for given the numbers now. NOEL MEADE winner before retiring, you bet.

    • 35/1 his four hotpots tomorrow. Vroom Vroom could be carrying millions on her back, worth £10 just for the bookies to squirm.

  2. VAUTOUR….This game as we know can be cloak and dagger, but this takes the biscuit. This man has now lost are very very large slice of credibility in the racing game, WOW…”We want to win the Gold Cup,” he said, “and if for whatever reason Vautour wasn’t going to run in the Gold Cup he would stay at home.”

Ricci gave no indication that Vautour’s preparation for Cheltenham was causing an issue.

Vautour is now in the RYANAIR….we are all mushrooms, it seems.
