Valiant Stakes 2019 Analysis [Plus FREE Tip]

The 2019 Valiant Stakes is the highlight of Ascot’s King George Qipco Weekend – Friday meeting (July 26, 3.35PM) and it is sponsored by Acorn Insurance. It is a Listed race for fillies and mares aged three and older and is run over 7 furlongs and 213 yards.

The Valiant Stakes was established in 1998 and notable winners have included Thistlebird, Euro Charline, and Red Box.

Valiant Stakes 10-Year-Trends

3-year-olds have won six of the last 10 editions of the Valiant Stakes, with 4-year-olds winning the other four. Only one 3-year-old and one 4-year-old in the last decade have carried a penalty to victory. Six winners had won their previous race, one had finished second, and three had finished third. Those runs had been between 13 and 35 days before their victory in the Valiant Stakes.

The draw has been inconclusive, with winners drawn 2, 1, 7, 5, 5, 1, 7, 9, 10, and 7. However, the last four winners were all berthed in the widest stall of all.

William Haggas has trained two winners of the last 10 winners, and Ryan Moore has ridden two winners, one of which was for Haggas. Winners have been as short as 4/6 and as big as 14/1.

Valiant Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide 2019

Anna Nerium

One of two 4-year-olds in this year’s field but she has to carry a 3lb penalty. That’s because she has won two Group 3 races. However, despite those successes in a higher grade, she has failed to carry a penalty in Listed races before. She has also been well beaten on two previous visits to Ascot but those defeats were in Group 2 and Group 1 races.

Ran okay when third in last year’s edition of the Valiant Stakes, when a 3-year-old, but this year’s race looks a stronger renewal. She also has quite a bit to find on ratings on her current mark of 99, and her last win came in a handicap off a mark of just 83. She’s also held by Anna Nerium on collateral form using a horse called Awesometank.

Main Edition

The first of this year’s 3-year-old challengers but she has a 5lb penalty to carry after winning a Group 2 in Germany this year. She did win a big race at Ascot as a 2-year-old, and has won over a mile, but she’s looked a non-stayer over a mile here at Ascot on her last run in England. She’s respected in this lower grade but she may struggle to repel challengers with more stamina in the final furlong.

Winner of two of her five races but her last win came in a handicap off a mark of just 84. She’s now rated 93 but that still leaves her with plenty to find in this company, and her trainer John Gosden has yet to win this race.

A second runner trained by John Gosden but this one is even lower-rated than Duneflower on a mark of just 86. She also failed to win a handicap off a mark of 79 just two starts ago and had to drop back into novice company on the all-weather at Chelmsford to get off the mark.

Look Around

Won a Listed race on her third start as a 2-year-old and was badly hampered on her final start of last season. She has run creditably in a Group 3 and the 1,000 Guineas this season but it’s a slight worry she’s been off the track for 82 days since her last run. However, her shrewd trainer Andrew Balding may simply have decided to miss some of the big summer meetings to give her a chance to mature, and she has the potential to make up the 10lb she needs to find on ratings now she’s dropped back into Listed class.

Magnetic Charm

William Haggas and Ryan Moore team up with what would be a popular winner for The Queen at Ascot. She has a favourite’s chance too, as she’s the highest-rated filly in the line-up. That mark of 109 has been earned with a Listed race win at York on her seasonal debut, whilst she was giving loads of weight to the first and the third when second in a handicap at Royal Ascot. Both her wins have come on good-to-firm ground, so she should be hard to beat.

Morpho Blue

There have been no previous Irish-trained winners of the Valiant Stakes but trainer Jessica Harrington sends over this 3-year-old. She has won twice this season but has 20lb to find on ratings and was well beaten in a Listed race in Ireland on her last start.

Valiant Stakes Verdict 2019

Penalised runners have won the Valiant Stakes but Anna Nerium hasn’t been at her best in two previous visits to Ascot and there are stamina doubts about Main Edition. It’s also hard to fancy Morpho Blue, Duneflower, or Jadeerah who all have plenty to find on ratings. Meanwhile, Preening will do well to match her third in last year’s edition in what looks a better race.

Magnetic Charm looks the obvious one with everything her favour and a win for the in-form combination of Haggas and Moore will come as no surprise. However, the value bet could be Look Around, with the stable of Andrew Balding firing in plenty of winners in the last week. She was considered good enough to run in the 1,000 Guineas and, having already won a Listed race, she looks the each-way play against the favourite.
