Pomfret Stakes Trends Analysis [Plus FREE Tip]

The 2019 Skybet Go-Racing-In-Yorkshire Summer Festival Pomfret Stakes (Sunday 28, July) is the highlight of Pontefract Racecourse’s Lookalike Legends Family Day. It is a Listed Race run over 1 mile and 6 yards and is open to horses aged three and older. The race was established in 2004 and notable recent winners have included Convey, Mondialiste, and Big Country.

Check out our 10-year-trends, runner-by-runner guide, and free tips for the Pomfret Stakes 2019

Pomfret Stakes 10-Year-Trends

Six of the last 10 winners of the Pomfret Stakes have come out of stalls 1, 2, or 3, including five of the last six. Despite that, it’s still possible to win from a higher draw, with the other four winners being drawn in stalls 5, 5, 7, and 9.

No 3-year-old has won the race in the last 10 years, with six 4-year-olds and four 5-year-olds being successful. Horses carrying a penalty have won the last five runnings, but none of the previous five winners carried a penalty.

Only one of the last 10 winners had won their previous race, with the remainder finishing anywhere from second to outside the top-10 on their last start. But all 10 winners had run between 7 and 39 days prior to their success in this race.

Sir Michael Stoute and Richard Fahey are the only two trainers to have trained a winner in the last decade to have a runner this year, whilst Silvestre De Sousa and Danny Tudhope will be hoping to ride their second winners of the race.

The shortest-priced winner of the last 10 Pomfret Stakes was 5/6 and the longest-priced winner was 10/1.

Pomfret Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide

Khafoo Shemimi

Five-year-old who won two Listed Races at Sandown in 2017 for trainer Richard Hannon Jnr, so he should be suited to the uphill finish at Pontefract. Having not won a race since, he was recently transferred to Sir Michael Stoute for whom he had his first run in 411 days in a Listed Race at Windsor. He was entitled to need the run that day and, after a slow start, he made late progress to finish third. Stoute had had another month to have worked his magic and he would have a good chance if he has unlocked his old talent. The booking of Danny Tudhope is another positive.

Oh This Is Us

Usually a consistent performer in a mix of Listed Races and handicaps, but some of his runs this season have suggested this 6-year-old may be slightly in decline. One of those was when just about a length behind Khafoo Shemimi at Windsor, a course that should have suited him as most of his wins have come on flat courses.

Put her proven ability to stay further than a mile to good use when staying on late to beat a former 1,000 Guineas winner over course and distance last time. She now has a 3lb penalty for that win and may need the race to be run at a blistering pace if she is to outstay some higher-class males.

Di Fede

Listed race winning 4-year-old filly, whose best two performances have come on soft ground at Ascot. It was slightly disappointing that she couldn’t win a Listed Race in France last time, when sent-off favourite. There also has to be a doubt about how strong she will be at the finish of this stiff mile, as she’s only won over six and seven furlongs so far in her career.

Lush Life

Lightly-raced four-year-old filly that has won four of her nine starts. However, her best win came off a mark of 91 in a class 3 handicap and she was well down the field on her only other try in a Listed Race. Connections try her in first-time blinkers but she needs the headgear to brings about a big chunk of improvement.

Pure Shores

She should handle the stiff climb to the line, as her last win came at Bath which also has an uphill finish. But that win came off a mark of just 75 and even her current mark of 83 leaves her with more of a mountain to climb than just a big hill.

I Could Do Better

3-year-old gelding who was 33/1 when winning a novice race on debut but has been long odds-on to win two similarly weak races since. That last run was on July 1, and he has since been transferred to trainer Ian Williams. The handicapper has allotted him a mark of 95 but he needs to improve again as he takes a massive step-up in class. The real unknown factor of the race, but he’s won on soft and good-to-firm, and any money for him would be interesting.

Marie’s Diamond

Has acquitted himself well in a variety of group races this season but has twice failed to win at Listed level. Connections have also dropped him back to seven-furlongs for his last few runs and all of his wins have come over that trip or shorter. He also doesn’t race like he’s crying out for this test of stamina.

Pomfret Stakes Verdict 2019

Lish Life and Pure Shores look to face a tough task, despite Pontefract producing more than its fair share of surprise winners. One of those was Exhort last time, who was sent-off at 25/1 against her own sex. Her ability to stay further won her that race but here stamina may come into play as much in a race unlikely to be run at such a blistering pace. Despite that, this stiff mile may still be too much for Marie’s Diamond and Di Fede, whilst Oh This Is Us may also prefer a flatter track.

That suggests Khafoo Shemimi is the one to be on, and he looks a good stats-fit being a well-drawn penalised 5-year-old. The unknown factor is I Could Do Better but he is drawn wider than most previous winners and he takes a big step-up in class.
