2019 Coral Charge Analysis [Plus Free Tip]

The 2019 Group 3 Coral Charge (Saturday 6 July, 1.50pm) is set to take place on good-to- firm ground, so don’t make a cup of tea or you might miss what should be an exciting race. The race started life as the Sprint Stakes, but the Coral Charge is now part of a Coral sponsored card that also features the Group 1 Eclipse Stakes. The most notable winner is Battaash, who won this in 2017 before going on to win a variety of other group race sprints over 5-furlongs.

Check out our 10-year-trends, runner-by-runner guide, and free tips for the Coral Charge 2019.

Coral Charge 2019 10-Year-Trends

A high draw hasn’t been impossible to overcome, with four of the last 10 winners drawn between stall-seven and stall-nine, but three winners have been drawn in stall-two and three in stall-four.

Three-year-olds have the best record in the last decade with five wins, whilst four-year-olds have notched up three wins. One five-year-old and one six-year-old have also won.

Only three winners have won their previous race, but those three winners all came in the last four years. No winner in the last decade had been absent from the track for more than 23 days, with seven days being the smallest gap between races.

The shortest-priced winner was 2/1, with the biggest-priced winner being 10/1. Charlie Hills and William Haggas are the only two trainers to have won the race in the last decade that have runners this year, and Ryan Moore is the only jockey in the field to have won the race in the last 10-years.

Coral Charge 2019 Runner-By-Runner Guide

Caspian Prince

This 10-year-old beat Marsha in a Group 2 in 2017 but time may have eventually caught up with him judged on his two performances this season. He finished a long way last in a hot contest first time out and then finished ninth in the Epsom Dash last time, which is his favourite race. Could bounce back, but Sandown is stiffer than ideal.

Muthmir

Not quite as old as Caspian Prince, but this nine-year-old is another that looks vulnerable to some young improving sprinters. Having finished fourth and second in the last two editions, he’s still respected, but declining handicap mark does suggest he has a bit to find.

Garrus

This three-year-old was improving rapidly for his former trainer Jeremy Noseda, and it’s no surprise that his connections have opted to send him to Charlie Hills, who has trained top sprinters like Muhaarar and Battaash in recent seasons. The form of his latest win looks strong now and, though he’s drawn higher than ideal in stall-nine, he could get a nice tow into the race from Caspian Prince in stall-eight.

Pocket Dynamo

Ran second to Garrus three starts ago in a race in which the winner broke the course record. He never looked like winning that day, but was conceding the winner 6lb, and can race off level-weights today. The form of his last two wins suggests he still has something to find, but his stable won the Listed Tipperary Stakes on Friday.

Rumble Inthejungle

Group 3 winner last season, when he beat Soldier’s Call by further than Garrus did last time. However, he flopped behind that horse last time and wasn’t at his best over six-furlongs on his last two runs. Interesting dropped back to five-furlongs, with the booking of Frankie Dettori suggesting his in-form trainer thinks he could take advantage of his low-draw.

Sergei Prokofiev

Shows a brilliant turn of foot when pitched against lower-class opposition, but his come from behind tactics means he’ll need some gaps to appear in the latter stages from his draw in stall-two. That doesn’t always happen at Sandown, but he can’t be ruled out.

The Cruising Lord

Finished behind Pocket Dynamo earlier this season over six-furlongs but may be better returned to the minimum trip. He was also beaten by Kurios last time, but he could turn that around with a 2lb pull at the weights.

Kurious

Goes well at Sandown where he has finished 1/2/1 in three previous runs. The last of those came in the Scurry Stakes, but even that form suggests he needs to find another chunk of improvement to win this race.

Poetry

Won a Listed Race in France last season, but has since finished behind several of today’s rivals in the Group 3 Cornwallis Stakes at Newmarket. Likely to pick up more races, but this may be aiming too high.

Signora Cabello

Won four-times in the early part of her two-year-old season, but didn’t look quite as good at the end of it. She’s also come up short in some decent races this season and it’s hard to see her winning this.

2019 Coral Charge Verdict

Eight of the 10 runners in the 2019 Coral Charge are three-year-olds and it’s asking a lot of the old boys Caspian Prince and Muthmir to repel them in the twilight of their careers.

Pocket Dynamo, The Cruising Lord, Kurious, Poetry, and Signora Cabello also have something to find on ratings and this should go to either Sergei Prokofiev, Garrus, or Rumble Inthejungle. Sergei Prokofiev has the class, but his hold-up style of running means he may not get a clear run. Meanwhile, Garrus is improving but we don’t how he’s taken to the yard of Charlie Hills and he’s been off for 51 days.

That means it could be worth chancing that Rumble Inthejungle will bounce back to his best form returned to five-furlongs. The form of his stable increases hopes he can, whilst the booking of Frankie Dettori also looks a statement of intent.
