Top 5 Highest-Rated 2,000 Guineas Winners

Beating all the other horses in the race is all any 2,000 Guineas winner can do but, whilst some 2,000 Guineas winners do little else for the rest of their career – some go on to stardom. Therefore, we thought we’d take a look at the 5 highest-rated winners of all time.

However, as it’s Guineas Weekend, if you’ve got a favourite 2,000 Guineas winner – feel free to regale us with your story below.

#5 Sea The Stars

Sea The Stars was a horse of a lifetime for trainer John Oxx and, after winning 2 of his 3 races as a two-year-old, he went on to win the 2,000 Guineas, The Derby, The Eclipse, The Juddmonte International, The Irish Champion Stakes and the Arc in his three-year-old year. However, it’s fair to say that the 2009 renewal of the 2,000 Guineas was far from vintage, with both the second and third failing to win in Group-1 company afterwards, though the fourth Rip Van Winkle went on to win twice in Group-1 company the following season.

#4 Dancing Brave

Dancing Brace is one of the few 2,000 Guineas winners to have won the race without winning a Group Race as a two-year-old, but he won his prep-race in the Craven Stakes easily before mowing down the top-class Green Desert, who was the sire of Sea The Stars’ sire Cape Cross. Again, it was by no means a vintage 2,000 Guineas, but his subsequent efforts in winning the Eclipse, The Irish Derby, The King George VI, and the Arc showed just why he is as revered now as he was back in 1986.

#3 Tudor Mistrel

The 1947 2,000 Guineas was a true-miler, and probably the easiest of all 2,000 Guineas winners. He won eased-down by 8-lengths with the general consensus being he could have won by 20-lengths if his jockey Gordon Richards had wanted him too. If he had stayed at a mile, he would have probably have remained unbeaten, as he also won the St James Palace Stakes and The Knight’s Royal Stakes (pre-runner to The QEII). However, connections tries to win the Epsom Derby and the Eclipse with him, but he failed to stay on either occasion.

#2 Brigadier Gerard

The 1971 2,000 Guineas winner faced just 5-rivals, however he was only third-favourite behind the brilliant pair of My Swallow and Mill Reef, who had dominated as two-year-olds, and had also won their trials. However, without a prep-race, Brigadier Gerard tracked the two favourites until the 3-furlong post where he began his challenge before sprinting away for a win that surprised many. He soon cemented his position as the best miler of the 20th Century though by winning 18 of his 19 races. Mill Reef also franked the form by remaining unbeaten afterwards, including wins in the Derby and the Arc.

#1 Frankel

2011 winner Frankel finished his career as Timeform’s highest-rated horse of all time on 147, and he wowed crowds with stunning displays. His 2,000 Guineas win was all that more meritorious because of the way he set-off like a 5-furlong sprinter, only to amaze the commentator and the crowd by having enough left in reserve to see off the opposition by 6-lengths. However, time would tell that he was probably lucky that he faced horses who failed to uphold the form, with the second and third home winning just one race between them afterwards.
