The Cheltenham Festival Yankee

Lots of horse racing fans will be heading to the Cheltenham Festival this week for what is traditionally four of the most entertaining days in the sporting calendar, whilst thousands more will head to the bookies to place bets, or bet on the 27 races online, via mobile devices or by phone.

Everybody will have their own betting strategy for Cheltenham, and many punters will be lumping on the short-priced favourites and praying that Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh have the kind of week that the betting markets suggest they might.

Personally, I’m more of an each-way man, and love to try and take the favourites on with selections that I think have a genuine chance of winning and an even better chance of getting placed even if the short-priced favourite obliges.

I also love to have an each-way Yankee prior to the start of the festival – so here are my four horse racing tips that I’m sticking in my – 1point each-way Yankee.

Attaglance 16/1 (Thursday 4.00pm)

Attaglance really should have won this race last year but jockey Brian Hughes decided to try and get up the rail on the run-in and ended-up being second as the door closed. This year’s form hasn’t been anything special but his trainer Malcolm Jefferson is on the hot-list right now and certainly knows how to ready one for the festival. 4lb higher than last year, but has won off a 3lb higher mark over hurdles.

Thomas Crapper 10/1 (Tuesday 5.15pm)

Trainer Robert Dickin has done a fantastic job of getting his charge handicapped on a chase mark of 134; exactly the same mark as when he finished 2nd to Don Poli at last year’s festival over hurdles. His best three performances over hurdles came in big-field at Cheltenham and, having only run in small-field races over hurdles, a big performance is expected.

Edeymi 8/1 (Thursday 2.05pm)

Went off at 8/1 when brought down in the 2013 Martin Pipe when rated 139, and 11/1 when finishing runner-up in the 2012 Fred Winter off a mark of 135. Had to have an enforced 18-month lay-off shortly afterwards but has returned for two runs this season, showing improved form when running in a qualifier for this, and can race off a mark of 135 again here.

Tiger Roll 20/1 (Wednesday 2.40pm)

Gordon Elliot’s charge may not be the best-handicapped horse in the field but there’s no getting away from the fact that he’s run his best two starts at Cheltenham. He won last year’s Triumph Hurdle and then gave 8lb and a half-length beating to Calipto (rated 143) here in October, since when he’s been picking up prize money in big Irish hurdles without going up further in the handicap. Looks sure to relish trip, track and ground.
