Sprint Cup Ante-Post Preview

The Haydock Sprint Cup (3rd September 16:30) started life in 1966 and was first run around a bend. It was first run on the straight course in 1986, and was awarded Group-1 Status in 1988.

It is open to horses 3 and older, and the classic generation have won 4 of the last 8 renewals, with trainer Henry Candy winning 2 of the last 7.

Sprint Cup Ante-Post

19 Runners are currently declared, but this is a classy affair with the winner likely to come from the following 9 horses.

Quiet Reflection 4/1

The 3-year-old filly made giant strides at the end of her 2-year-old season, and carried on that progression with a Group-2 victory over course and distance before going on to win the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot. Third in a high-class July Cup afterwards, she looks sure to make a bold bid, and is versatile ground-wise.

Limato 11/2

Trained by Henry Candy, the 4-year-old was a stunning winner of the July Cup, and would have been an impressive winner of the Nunthorpe without the top-class Meccas Angel. Will surely start favourite if he runs, but the market is suggesting that he won’t.

The Tin Man 13/2

Trainer won the 2012 renewal, but this one has yet to prove he’s top-class. Won a group-3 last time, but the placed horses haven’t franked that form.

Twilight Son 7/1

Looks more likely to run that stablemate Limato, and this race has been on his agenda since he won it last year. Holds several of these on form, and is another likely to go close if the ground doesn’t get any quicker.

Dancing Star 15/2

Improved with every run, and was an impressive winner of the Stewards Cup. Closely related to top-class sprinter Lochsong, and could easily take this step-up in her stride.

Magical Memory 8/1

Group-3 winner earlier in the season, but has fallen short in group-1 company so far, including twice behind Twilight Son.

Sudeois 12/1

Trainer won this in 2014, and he’s already gone close to Group-1 victory in the July Cup. Looks sure to be in the firing line, and definite each-way possibilities.

Donjuan Triumphant 14/1

Strictly held by Quiet Reflection on early-season form, but posted a much improved effort last time in France. Also hit a new-level of form at this time last year, and could be about to peak whilst some of these have had hard seasons already.

Sprint Cup Summary

Limato would be hard to beat but doesn’t look like turning-up and, though Quiet Reflection looks sure to go close, it may be worth taking a chance on another 3-year-old in Donjuan Triumphant, who raised his game at this time last year.
