Scarbrough Stakes Preview

The Listed Scarbrough Stakes is the highlight of the opening day of Doncaster’s St Leger meeting, with England’s fifth classic the St Leger being the highlight of the meeting on Saturday.

St Leger

However, unlike the St Leger, the 5-furlong Scarbrough Stakes is all about speed, and brings together horses that are aged 2 and upwards.

The last 10 renewals have been won by horses aged between 3 and 8, though the last two winners were both from the classic generation that hadn’t previously won the contest this century. However, when you consider those winners were the high-class Cotai Glory and Meccas Angel, it’s easy to see why they won.

11 Runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Scarbrough Stakes

Line Of Reason

Listed Race winner, but often finds himself below this class, but two high in the ratings to win a handicap. Sixth in the Beverley Bullet last time, where he was behind the re-opposing Muthmir.

Group-2 winner last July over 5-furlongs, and won the 2014 Portland Handicap off 100 at Doncaster, but below his best so far this year. Stable on fire at the moment though, so could bounce back.

Pearl Secret

Another who won a Group-2 last year, but has been winless since. Stable have been quiet this season, but this is the easiest race he’s contested for a while.

93-rated handicapper who it’s hard to make a case for.

Worrying that she’s been off the track since landing a decent contest in Leicester in April, and balance of form suggests she’s got to find improvement to win.

Listed winner at Chantilly in October, and ran her best race this year when fourth there in a group-2. Not troubled the judge in the UK in good races, and others have better prospects.

Deserves to land a decent race after running consistently, a run which saw her last win a handicap off 79, but is now rated 109 after finishing fifth in the Nunthorpe.

Go On Go On Go On

Massively progressive in winning last 3 runs, but those came in class-4 and class-3 races. Could improve further but yet to face any horse of this class.

Two excellent runner-up finishes in big handicaps, but not sure to be suited by drop down to 5-furlongs.

The only two-year-old in the line-up is getting 21lb or more from all her rivals, and her second in a Listed Race last time must give her a chance. No 2-year-old has won the race so far though, and the 2-year-olds flopped against their elders in the Nunthorpe.

Scarbrough Stakes Summary

The 3-year-old don’t look to have the class of either of the last two winners and, whilst the 2-year-old Equimou is interesting, this looks a great opportunity for either Muthmir or Pearl Secret to get their head in front again. Muthmir is just preferred with his stable in red hot form.
