Racing Post Trophy Preview And Tip

The Racing Post Trophy (Saturday 3.50pm) is the last Group-1 Race in Britain this year, and it is open to 2-year-olds. It is run over Doncaster’s straight-mile course, and is universally accepted to be an early trial for potential Derby Winners, with 5 Reference Point, High Chaparral, Motivator, Authorized and Camelot all completing the double.

Aidan O’Brien has been the most successful trainer in the last decade with 3 winners (7 in total) whilst Andrea Atzeni has been the most successful jockey, winning the last 3 renewals for different trainers.

10 Runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Racing Post Trophy.

Bay Of Poets

Shown two-ways of running so far in his 3-race career, finishing last either side of a maiden win. Hard to make a case for.

Go off the mark with a win in his fourth attempt in a maiden, and that leaves him with plenty of improvement to find.

Finished a 3½-length runner-up to the re-opposing Rivet in a maiden but, whilst he got off the mark next time, Rivet has since won a group-2.

Finn McCool

Another who took 4 runs to get off the mark, and jockey-bookings suggest he’s the least fancied of the Aidan O’Brien runners.

Raheen House

Trainer Brian Meehan won the 2008 renewal with Crowded House, but this one doesn’t look as good as that one on the evidence of his 3 runs so far.

Well-backed to win a York Maiden on second start, and again when winning a Group-2 over 7-furlongs here. Disappointed in Dewhurst since, but could bounce back here with Andrea Atzeni doing the steering.

Most experienced runner with 8 starts, but put up his best perforamce when seond in a French group-1 last time. However, that form still leaves with around 7-9lb to find with the bets of these.

Sir Dancelot

Won two 7-furlong races before seemingly outstayed over the same trip in a betteer race. Dropped back to 6-furlongs to win a listed Race, and not sure a mile is what he currently wants.

The Anvil

Placed in a Group-3 and a Group-2, but only looks Aidan O’Brien’s second best runner on paper, which is backed-up by the jockey bookings.

Won a maiden on second start before finishing second to stablemate Capri in the Group-2 Beresford Stakes, and Ryan Moore does the steering here. Obvious chance on bare form of his last 2 performances, though still has 2lb to find with Rivet on official ratings.

Racing Post Trophy Tip

Aidan O’Brien plunders more group-1 races than anyone, and it would be no surprise if he took the last one of the season. However, the booking of Andrea Atzeni suggests Rivet is expected to go close, and he looks the value bet.
