Neil Mulholland Stable Tour

Neil Mulholland is a racehorse trainer with a big future if, as his statistics suggest, he keeps improving year on year at his current rate. The 2013/14 Season saw him notch-up 31 winners, which he improved to 51 in 2014/15, and 60 in 2015/16. However, he’s already amassed 70 in 2016/17 – and he looks on course to hit the one-hundred winners mark for the first-time.

He already has a Bet365 Gold Cup Winner and a Cheltenham Festival Winner to his name, and it won’t be the biggest surprise if he lands more prestigious races before the end of the season – with the Grand National very much a priority for three of his stable stars.

Therefore, we thought it was a good time to take a look at some of the better horses in the Mullholland Stable.

Mulholland has already made a name for himself by taking horses from other trainers and improving them, and it will be interesting to see what he can do with this former Harry Fry trained 149-rated chaser. It would be no surprise to see him at the Cheltenham Festival, as he was third in the Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle at the 2015 Cheltenham Festival off a mark of 147 – so watch out.

Formerly with David Pipe, for whom he last won off a mark of 139, he is currently rated 144, and has received little leniency from the handicapper so far after four races for Mulholland. Likely to be seen to best effect on decent ground, and interesting should that coincide with being dropped a few pounds.

Would have been a convincing winner of the Hennessey Gold Cup if a certain Native River hadn’t got in the way, and may have still been feeling the effects of those exertions when unsighted in the Welsh National over Christmas. The Grand National is the main aim though, and has always looked like he might really enjoy a real stamina test on a flat-track.

Likes 2½-miles on decent ground and, though last seen winning over fences, Mulholland has suggested she’ll be seen next over hurdles as a warm-up to running in the big Mare’s race at the Cheltenham Festival. That could be a tough ask with the likes of Vroum Vroum Mag and Apples Jade in opposition, but Mulholland has had a placed runner in the race before.

Absolutely dotted-up off 130 in a handicap hurdle in November, and a mark of 142 may not be beyond him. Still eligible for novice hurdles and handicaps, and Mulholland looks sure to find the right race for this imposing horse, who looks sure to make an even better chaser next year.

Mulholland thinks this is potentially the best horse he’s had, but he has some way to go to prove that. Won at Cheltenham over hurdles and fences and, though he flopped in the 2016 Albert Bartlett Hurdle, it would be no surprise if he exploited a chase mark of 146 in a big race before the end of the season.

Many think this horse would have won the 2015 Grand National if he hadn’t fallen, and he’s now a generous 7lb lower than when fifth in the Bet365 Gold Cup last season after two below poor runs this season. However, he’s usually better in the spring on decent ground – and he has Grand National Plot written all over him.

The third Mulholland arrow likely to be aimed at the Grand National, but this one may be better going right-handed. Fell in the Becher Chase in November, but is owned by the Waley-Cohens – so Aintree will be the target.
