Middle Park Stakes Preview

The Middle Park Stakes (3.30 Saturday) is the group-1 highlight of the final day of Newmarket’s Cambridgeshire Meeting, and is a 6-furlong race that is open to 2-year-old colts. It was first run in 1866, and derives its name from the stud of founder William Blenkiron.

Aidan O’Brien has trained 4 winners in total, but only 1 in the last 10 years, whilst Charlie Appleby and Mark Johnston are other represented trainers who have had a previous winner. Meanwhile, Frankie Dettori has ridden 2 of the last 10 winners (4 in all), whilst William Buick has ridden 2 of the last 6 winners.

10-runners are set to line-up for the 2016 Middle Park Stakes.

Blue Point HorseBlue Point

Charlie Appleby trained colt who has won 3 of his 4 starts, culminating in the group-2 Gimcrack at York. Had previously been a neck second to Mehmas in a group-2 at Goodwood, and shares top-rating with that opponent here.

Intelligence Cross

Looks the Aidan O’Brien trained second string on jockey bookings, and has been beaten twice already by Mehmas.

East winner of a Thirsk Maiden on debut, but beaten 4-lengths by The Last Lion last time, and that horse is himself held by several of the other runners on form.

Medicine Jack

Won a group-2 on fourth starts, but was beaten 6¾-length by the top-class Carvaggio, leaving him something to find on collateral form.

Twice a group-2 winner over 6-furlongs, but beaten 4½-lengths by the brilliant Churchill last time over 7-furlongs. Return to 6-furlongs should suit this Frankie Dettori ridden colt, though the Hannon stable have yet to win a Middle Park.

A horse with a real fast ground action, but had to settle for second fully 3-lengths behind Blue Point at York. Stable in decent form, but needs to find improvement.

Won 3 of his 4 races, including a valuable sales race last time out. Had a low-weight there though, and was beaten 9-lengths by Blue Point at York, even if that wasn’t his true running.

Peace Envoy

Ryan Moore looks to land his first Middle Park on Aidan O’Brien’s Group-3 winner, but he’s looked vulnerable in group-2 and group-1 company since.

Silver Line

Looked useful when winning on debut, and stable out of form when running respectably at Royal Ascot and when 2-lengths behind Mehmas in the group-2 July Stakes over course and distance. Has room for improvement after just 3 runs, with stable back in form, and interesting to see if there’s money for him.

The Last Lion

Typical tough as teak Mark Johnston trained 2-year-old, but beaten on both forays into group-2 company, and was behind Blue Point at York.

Middle Park Stakes Summary

Godolphin are doubly represented with Blue Point and Silver Line, and the former looked a potential top-class performer at York. He’ll be tough to beat here as he has more room for improvement than his Goodwood conqueror Mehmas, whilst Silver Line could be one for the each-way money with his stable in great form.

  1. I am very interested in tracing back the name of William Blenkiron . My name is Paul Blenkiron (born 1970) my fathers name was Martin John Blenkiron (born 1945), with my grandads name being Alan Blenkiron. History is fascinating and I would like to know more for my sons sake . Maybe I or my son could be horse whisperers descending from the races founder William Blenkiron. Well you never know. Any information on this would be fantastic to know.
