Hungerford Stakes Preview And Tip

The Hungerford Stakes (Saturday 4.10) derives its name from the town of Hungerford that is situated just a few miles from Newbury Racecourse. It is a Group-2 race run over 7-furlongs, and has been run on a straight course since 2002, and has held Group-2 status since 2006.

3-year-olds have won 5 of the last 10 renewals, whilst 4-year-olds have won 3, and there has been one 6-year-old and one 7-year-old winner.

Hungerford Stakes

No trainer has won the race twice in the last decade, but Adam Kirby has ridden the winner twice in that time.

7 runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Hungerford Stakes.

Ran Home Of The Brave to a neck in a 7-Furlong Group-3 at Haydock, but only seventh in another Group-3 race at Ascot since. Won a Listed Race since at Pontefract over a mile on latest run and, though he has the potential to win a race of this nature, he isn’t the most consistent of horses.

Dark Emerald

One of those unfortunate horses who is too high in the handicap to win a decent handicap, but isn’t good enough for Group Races. Only 7lb to find on official ratings, but no reason why he should find it even with dual winning jockey Adam Kirby in the saddle.

Golden Steps

Took advantage of a drop in the weights to win a handicap off 99. He’s also been placed over 6-furlongs at Newbury and, though he should be better at this trip, he’s the lowest-rated horse in the field.

Home Of The Brave

Twice a Group-3 winner, and his second to Dutch Connection in this year’s Lennox Stakes is the best piece of form on offer. Not run at Newbury, but no reason why this straight course won’t suit him, and he’s a worthy favourite.

Won a York handicap off 103 earlier this season, and easy winner of 3-runner Conditions Stakes on latest start. However, he was beaten in a Listed contest and a Group-3 in between, and is likely to come up short.

Also twice a Group-3 winner, but has been beaten 5-times at Group-2 Level. He was also beaten 3-lengths by Home Of The Brave in the aforementioned Lennox Stakes.

Richard Pankhurst

Breathtaking winner of the Chesham Stakes as a two-year-old marked him down as a potential Group-Horse, but has failed to run-up to expectations in an injury-curtailed career since. Still has potential after just 6 runs, and interesting he has won both his 7-furlong starts.

Hungerford Stakes Summary

Home Of The Brave has the best form in the book, should get the run of the race out in front, his stable are in form, and he looks a worthy favourite. However, if you fancy taking a chance on one, then the potential improver Richard Pankhurst is unbeaten at this trip.
