Hugo Palmer Stable Tour

Hugo Palmer hasn’t made the same exciting start to the 2017 turf season as he did in 2016 but, with plenty of ammunition for the coming months, it’s time to take a look at some of the dual classic winner’s big hopes.

ARCHITECTURE
The aim is to get this 4-year-old filly to win a stakes race, and she surely will at some point having finished second in both the Oaks and Irish Oaks last season. However, she’s unlikely to be seen until September at the earliest having suffered a setback.

BAYDAR
Rattled up a four-timer last season and is now rated 105. His trainer hopes he could become a Listed or even Group winner this season, but could be of more interest in one of the high-class handicaps over 10-furlongs, possibly when there’s a bit of cut in the ground.

CRIMEAN TATAR
Finished a disappointing last in the Yorkshire Cup at the Dante Meeting, but can be forgiven that run as it was his first attempt on a soft surface. Wins have come at 12-furlongs so far, but his trainer is convinced he could be an Ascot Gold Cup horse. If he doesn’t quite hit the heights on turf, then he could be a very interesting contender for the All-Weather Marathon Series.

GALILEO GOLD
Another of the stable’s big guns to disappoint in May, and his fifth in the Lockinge was worrying considering he was regressive at the end of last season. He is a 2,000 Guineas and Royal Ascot winner though, so might be interesting if you can get a big price about him when the stable is in better form.

GIFTED MASTER
Highly tried after a successful start to last season, and probably best to write-off two poor runs in Meydan this winter. Likes fast ground, and may prove at 6-furlongs at either Listed or Group-3 level.

HOME OF THE BRAVE
7-furlong specialist who belied the stable’s poor form to win Leicester’s King Richard III Listed Stakes for a second time. That form looks even better now considering the way runner-up Tasleet won at York, and he should pick-up more listed or group-3 races this season.

MURAD KHAN
Big flop on his last two starts, but handicapper may drop him a pound or two before the Royal Hunt Cup, which is his big target for the season.

BEST OF DAYS
Won a Group 2 over a mile, but thought to want the step-up to 12-furlomgs this season, and is a possible outsider for the Derby. Beat The Anvil last season so not that much to find with many of Aidan O’Brien’s Derby entries on a line through him.

HEDONISM

Nicely bred two-year-old for whom her trainer has high hopes. One to watch out for in the coming weeks.
