Hackwood Stakes Preview

The Hackwood Stakes (Newbury, Saturday 3.35) is a 6-furlong race that has enjoyed Group-3 Status since 2006. Since then, it has been won by five 4-year-olds, one 5-year-old, one 3-year-old, two 6-year-olds, and one 7-year-old.

William Haggas is the only trainer to have won the race twice in that time, whilst no jockey has ridden more than one winner in the same period.

Hackwood Stakes

13 Runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Hackwood Stakes

Group-3 winner last year, but has been well-beaten four times at this level since, and this looks a good group-3.

Charming Thought

Won the Group-1 Middle Park as a 2-year-old, and ran a very respectable race in a Listed Race on his return from 20 months on the side-lines. Expected to improve for that run, and every chance with stable in form.

Won a fillies Group-3 race last time, but perhaps better judged on her third of four in last year’s renewal.

Lord Of The Land

Came from France with a decent reputation but, though stable does well with this kind of horse, he’s yet to show much in four runs in England though, but interesting if money comes for him as he drops back to 6-furlongs.

The Tin Man

Yet to win above Listed Level, but was sent off favourite for a Group-1 at Royal Ascot. Flopped there though and, though he could win this easily on the form of his fourth in last year’s Qipco Champion Sprint, his stable form is a worry.

Tends to run well at Group-3 level, but was last in last yea’s renewal, and would need a few other to probably underperform to win.

Hard to fancy on his performance in a handicap last time, or on his third in a poor group-3 the time before that.

Two-year-old form has proved to be nowhere near as good as it looked at the time, and hard to fancy on his three runs this year. Best performance was on fast ground though, which he should get here.

Ibn Malik

Stable won last year’s renewal with a 3-year-old, but this one is dropping down in trip, and has shown best form at Newmarket. Can’t rule out though.

Mr Lupton

Has looked very good on a couple of occasions, but not the most consistent animal. Jamie Spencer can get a late rattle out of him, and the hardest horse in the field to nail down.

Runs for twice-winning trainer William Haggas, but doesn’t look up to this on all form so far.

She was a very good 2-year-old and, after not staying the mile of the 1,000 Guineas, she wasn’t disgraced behind Quiet Reflection last time. She’ll also appreciate this quicker surface, and could play a leading role.

Seemed to take a big step forward when second in a handicap last-time, but will need to take another big step forward to land this.

Hackwood Stakes Summary

The Tin Man and Charming Spirit are both 4-year-olds with obvious chances, however it may be worth giving Illuminate an each-way chance back on a fast surface.
