Goodwood Racecourse Guide

Goodwood Racecourse is located against the stunning backdrop of the South Downs, and on a truly glorious summer’s day it is one of the best places to be in Britain. It also happens to stage one of Britain’s best race meetings in Glorious Goodwood, a 5-day extravaganza that features brilliant races such as the Group 1 Goodwood Cup, the Group 1 Sussex Stakes and the Group 1 Nassau Stakes, which are ably supported by other prestigious races such as the Stewards Cup and the Lennox Stakes.

Goodwood also plays host to other important meetings throughout the season, with a 3-day meeting in Spring, and the another 3-day meeting in which the Celebration Mile takes place.

The Course

Goodwood is a right-handed switchback track in which there are two bends. Whilst Sprint races are run on the straight track, races between 7-furlongs and 10-furlongs take place around the lower-bend, whilst races over 11-furlongs or more take place around the top-bend.

The downhill nature of Goodwood tends to lend itself to speedy prominent races, especially when the ground is fast, though horses can win from behind if the front-runners do too much too early. In big-fields, it is rare for there not to be a hard-luck story or two, whilst even in small fields there is often enough interference to keep the Stewards busy throughout the afternoon.

A low-draw can be a significant advantage in big-fields, and horses trapped out wide will often find it difficult to win as they may have to travel a good deal further than those drawn on the rail. However, the 2-mile start is positioned in such a way that those drawn high may be able to grab an early advantage.

Trainers To Watch Out For

Richard Hannon is numerically the leading trainer at Goodwood over the last 3 seasons, but you’d be showing a loss of £97 if you’d backed his 239 runners to level-stakes. However, followers of Mark Johnston are showing a £55 profit for just a £1 stake on each of his 171 runners, which produced 25 winners, and Johnston especially targets Glorious Goodwood. Other trainers to note are Henry Candy and Gary Moore, with Candy enjoying a profitable 23% Strike-rate, whilst Moore’s 9 winners from 66 runs have produced a £22 profit.

Jockeys To Follow

Jim Crowley is the only jockey to break the 20-winner barrier at Goodwood in the last 3 seasons, but his 168 rides would have left your nursing a level-stakes loss of over £47. Therefore, the two jockeys to watch out for are William Buick and Andrea Atzeni. Buick excels here with his 24% strike-rate producing a £46 profit, whilst Atzeni’s 16 winners from 81 rides returned an acceptable profit of £15.
