Dubai Carnival Tips Saturday 4 March
The Dubai Carnival continues to attract some of the world’s greatest race horses, and this weekend’s star attraction is the Roger Varian trained Postponed. He appears for the first time since being a beaten favourite in the Prix de L’arc De Triomphe, and runs in the Group-2 Dubai City Of Gold. There’s also two group-1 races on the Meydan Card, and we’ve tips for both of those races.
1.10 Dubai City Of Gold Sponsored By Emirates Skycargo (Group 2)
This may only be a group-2 contest, but it marks the return of Postponed, and it’s great that connections have decided to keep him in training as a 6-year-old when a lucrative career at stud surely beckons. Connections have no doubt got a repeat big for the Sheema Classic in mind later in the month, but it will be a huge disappointment if he can’t also double-up in this on-route. He returns from 153-days off the track, but he also won after a similar break last year. However, there is a small doubt about him as, though he won the Prix Fox on his penultimate start Last season, he was only a disappointing fifth in the Arc when last seen in September – but he’s still fancied to take the spoils.

2.55 Al Maktoum Challenge R3 Sponsored By Emirates Airline (Group 1)
There’s little doubt that this is the strongest contest of the night, despite there being just 8-runners. Last year’s winner Special Fighter returns to defend his crown, but he was battle hardened by this time last year after already having had a few runs, and might lack for fitness after 343 days off the track. This may also be a warm-up for Move Up and Lani, who have respectively had 154-days and 90-days off the track, so it might be worth giving Furia Cruzada a chance to win again after impressing on her Meydan debut last time.

3.30 Jebel Hatta Sponsored By Emirates Airline (Group 1)
This is only a group-1 in name, and most of the field won’t get a better chance of winning one in what is a weak group-1 field. However, Promising Run couldn’t cope with the high-class Zarak last time, whilst Folkswood’s win was only in a handicap. Muffri’Ha could go close if he doesn’t get involved in a battle for the lead, but looks perfectly positioned in stall-3 to get a good early position. However, Decorated Hero proved he handled an all-weather surface when accounting for Arab Spring and other useful all-weather sorts last time in the UK, and he should be able to track the pace from stall-1 before pouncing late, providing he’s acclimatised since his arrival.
