Doonside Cup Preview

The Doonside Cup (Thursday, Ayr 4.50) has been moved to the first day of the Ayr Gold Cup Meeting, and this Listed contest is open to horses aged 3 or older, and is run over 10-furlongs.

Ayr Racecourse

Winners have been aged 3 to 6 in the last decade, with 3-year-old amassing the most wins with 4. Meanwhile, Saeed bin Suroor has trained 4 winners in the last 7 years (3 of which weren’t 3-year-olds), whilst Frankie Dettori is the only jockey to have ridden 2 winners in the last decade.

9 runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Doonside Cup.

Made all over course and distance to win his maiden last year, and has been highly-tried this year. Didn’t quite seem to stay 12-furlongs at group-2 level, but then looked outpaced at 10-furlongs at group-1 level. Dropped in class here though, and every chance.

Secret Number

Represents Saeed bin Suroor, and this lightly-raced 6-year-old hasn’t been kept in training for nothing. Trainer targets the race, and has to be of interest having previously scored at both Listed and Group-3 level. Usually runs at 12-furlongs, but may get away with shorter trip on soft ground.

Maleficent Queen

Two from two over course and distance included a Listed Win, though the runner-up there has done little for the form. Disappointed last time, but looks sure to be on the premises for inform trainer.

Well-beaten in a handicap off a mark of 90 last-time, and little chance on that form.

Irish trainer has enjoyed much success here this season, but last-time out victory was off a mark of 68, and still rated 30lb below the principles.

The most lightly-raced horse in the field, but has yet to prove conclusively that he’ll handle the soft conditions. Handicap win off 102 last-time, but well-beaten in a Group-3 previously.

Henry The Explorer

Rated just 70, and is surely just giving the owners a day out.

My Brother

Hard to fancy on last-time out 11-length second off a mark of 87 in a handicap.

Class-2 handicap winner off a mark of 86, but that still leaves him with loads to find.

Doonside Cup Summary

The winner should come from Abdon, Almodovar, Maleficent Queen or Secret Number, and you can make a case for any of them. Abdon looks to have the most potential, Alomodovar has the best form and is a course and distance winner, Maleficent Queen is 2 from 2 over course and distance, and Secret Number hails from the prolific winning stable of Saeed Bin Suroor.
