Arc De Triomphe Preview & Tip

Won his last 6 races, and comes out top on both official ratings and time-ratings. Looking to uphold his title of the best middle-distance horse in the world, and the biggest problem may be the short run-in at Chantilly, though he had the pace to win over 10-furlongs last time. Has previously proved that travelling to France is no problem, and will surely go close.

The Japanese stopwatch boys have been waxing lyrical about this one’s sectional times, and 3-year-olds have a great record in the race, even if Japanese horses do not. Connections may have learned from previous mistakes though, and he’s had a prep run here, and will have a French jockey on his back in Christophe Lemaire.

Autumn is the star filly’s time of year, but she tends to finish second much more often than she finished first. Unlucky in the race last year though, and reversed the form with the winner Golden Horn in the Breeders Cup afterwards. Suspicion she is better at 10-furlongs though.

This year’s 3-year-old colts don’t look to be out of the top draw, but the Derby winner does have more room for improvement back over 12-furlongs after being beaten in the Irish Champion Stakes over 10-furlongs. However, he picked-up an injury there, and his chances would have been better on softer ground.

New Bay

Maybe had his best chance of Arc victory when third as a three-year-old behind Treve in 2014 but, after injury, he returned to something like his best in Ireland last time. Looks to have been primed for the race once again, and his connections have a good record in the race.

Left Hand

Two ways to look at her form. Her second behind La Cressoniere in the French Oaks suggests she’s a potential big-price for each way players, but the proximity of Endless Time to her last time suggests that her form would be nowhere near good enough.

Order Of St George

It’s hard to say that Ballydoyle don’t know what they’re doing, but the Ascot Gold Cup winner surely doesn’t have the speed to win an Arc. Stranger things have happened, but Found and Highland Reel look to be the stable’s main hopes.

Highland Reel

Has a victory over former Arc runner-up Flintshire on his CV, and this year’s King George winner may try and make this a true test from the front if he can. Quick ground would also suit him well, though Postponed beat him easily when they met at York.

Arguably improved since finishing tenth last year at 100/1, though a variety of form-lines suggest he’ll have to take another step forward to get involved in the finish.

Savoir Vivre

German runners have a decent recent record in the race, and this year’s Derby runner-up has already proven he can travel to France and win. Could still have improvement to come, but has to find some to be a challenger.

Godolphin have enjoyed Arc success before, but this one has no obvious claims to be involved in the finish.

The Grey Gatsby

A shadow of his former self on all form this year, but likes the ground and used to have a potent turn of foot. Won the French Derby as a 3-year-old at Chantilly, but trainer will have had to work a miracle to get him back to his best.

Siljans Saga

Held on this year’s from by both Savoir Vivre and Silverware, but might reverse that form with those rivals as he was unlucky in the race in 2014, and was beaten only 5-lengths last year, suggesting he’s well-suited to the demands of the race. However, still hard to see him winning.

Represents the sponsors, but had to drop to a lowly grade to get off the mark for the season, and won’t be winning.

One Foot In Heaven

Boasts Group Three and Group Two wins, but looked woefully out of form on last two starts.

Talented but temperamental individual, and connections will somehow have had to curb the latter for his talent to give him even a slim chance.

Arc de Triomphe Tip

The likes of Postponed, Highland Reel, Found and New Bay are older horses who all have the form in the bag to go close. However, as 3-year-olds have the best record, it may be worth siding with Makahiki, whose connections have made every effort to give him the perfect preparation by running him in one of the Arc Trials, and booking a local jockey who rides Chantilly well.
