Ante-Post Advice: The Matron Stakes
The Matron Stakes is a one-mile Group-1 race run at Leopardstown, which is open to fillies and mares. The last 10 renewals have been won by five 3-year-olds and five older horses, though it’s worth noting that the last 4 winners were all older horse. No horse, jockey, trainer or owner has won the race more than once in the last decade.
This year’s renewal will be run on Saturday 12th September, and here’s our analysis of the 10 possible runners, and our ante-post tip.
This likeable 3-year-old has won 4 of her 8 races over trips between 5f and 7f. However she would need the extra furlong of this mile contest to bring out about 10lb extra improvement for her to win if the principles are on song.
Amazing Maria 3/1
Her 3 runs for David O’Meara have resulted in a Group 2 and two Group 1 victories. She won all 3 with a telling burst of speed, and the form of her victory in the Prix Rothschild looks rock-solid with Ervedya in second having won this year’s Coronation Stakes, and 3rd and 4th Bawina and Odeliz going onto occupy the first two places in another Group 1. The only slight negative is that she has to go round a bend here.
Looked highly promising in her first few starts but has been put in her place on her last three; and doesn’t look a Group 1 filly at the moment.
French trained filly who has two Group 2s to her name, but has been beaten over 4 lengths by both Legatissimo and Amazing Maria this season.
Euro Charline 12/1
Won the Group 1 Beverly D Stakes in Canada last year, but could only manage 4th in this year’s renewal. Only a length behind Amazing Maria at Newmarket earlier in the season and, though she could easily finish in the money, she never looked like winning there.
Iveagh Garden 50/1
Lightly-raced 4-year-old but has been kept to a soft surface so far, and would have to improve dramatically to win.
Seemed to outstay her rivals when winning the English 1,000 Guineas, and has been campaigned over further than a mile since then. Extremely impressive when winning the 10-furlong Nassau Stakes last–time out but, whilst would have a favourite’s chance, connections may let her take her chance in the 10-furlong Irish Champion Stakes on the same day. A strict line through Lucida and Ervedya also suggests that Amazing Maria may have her measure.
Military Angel 33/1
Has been found wanting in Listed Races and has no form-right to win this.
Still got time to improve, but 7-lengths off the pace in Irish 1,000 Guineas suggests she’s an unlikely winner.
Stelp Amach 66/1
Look totally outclassed.
On ratings, and visual impressions, this should be fought out between Amazing Maria and Legatissimo, but with slight doubts about the latter’s participation – Amazing Maria has to be the ante-post pick at a very reasonable looking 3/1.
