A Profile Of John Francome

John Francome is the English former National Hunt Champion Jockey, television pundit and author, born in December 13, 1952 in Swindon Wiltshire in England, in a traditional family environment, with no connections to the horse racing world at all.

He made his first move into the horse racing world at 16 years of age when he became an apprentice to Lambourn trainer Fred Winter and so began his vocation as a jockey, during his career he rode a total of 1,138 winners, and during this time he was Champion Jockey seven times between 1976 and 1985, positioning himself as the third most successful National Hunt jump jockey of all time.

Francome retired from racing in 1985, moving on as a trainer for 18 months before becoming a TV presenter for Channel 4’s horse racing broadcasts. Francome was awarded an MBE in 1986 for services to racing.

British Jump Racing Champion Jockey

In Great Britain’s National Hunt racing, the title of Champion Jockey is bestowed on the jockey who has ridden the most winning horses during a racing season, the award was given to the jockey who had ridden the most winners during a year but in 1926, this changed, instead identifying the jockey who had ridden the most winners during a campaign season for example 1926-27.

Some of his books titles, related to the Horse racing industry or autobiography are:

Inside track, Tip off, Stalking horse, Dark horse, Cover up, Bet safe

He is a great example of an athlete who knows how to guide his career in a horizontal way. From racer to trainer, going into TV and completing his career with a legacy of books. He never lost the path and therefore he is still reaping the rewards, just last year it was announced that the formerly known Worcester Novices’ Chase will be run as the Ladbrokes John Francome Novices’ Chase.
