Runner-By-Runner Guide

Clever Cookie

Love the course and distance, and should relish the soft ground. However, last year’s winner is only the joint sixth highest-rated horse, and bids to become the first 9-year-old to win the race in the modern era.

Crimean Tatar

Highly-regarded 4-year-old who should relish this step-up in trip having won twice over 12-furlongs, and having been a close-up fourth behind Muntahaa last time. Soft ground a complete unknown though as he’s only raced on good-to-firm and fast all-weather surfaces so far.

Has 4lb and upwards in hand of his rivals on official ratings, and he’s won both his starts at about this trip. Not sure he wants the ground to be this soft though, and that may place too much emphasis on stamina, though Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore have targeted this race to great success in the last decade.

High Jinx

Had two years off the track, and its asking a lot of this 9-year-old to have found a stone of improvement in that time.

Finished 6-lengths behind Muntahaa in a maiden last June, but has improved steadily since. Won a group-3 on good-to-soft last time and, having won his maiden on soft ground, he could go well here.

Some of his form gives him every chance in this, but stamina could be suspect after he was only fourth in last year’s St Leger. Has also been kept away from soft ground so far, though has twice been placed on good-to-soft.

Simple Verse

2015 St Leger winner was highly-tried over 12-furlongs last year, before winning over 14-furlongs, and then finishing third in the Champions Long Distance Cup. Will probably have bigger targets later in the season, but has won all 3 starts at around this trip.

Endless Time

Won three times after a break, and much to like about her two wins on soft ground. Also beat Simple Verse in 2015, and very creditable second to Vazirabad when last seen in October.

There’s little doubt that Dartmouth is the best horse in the race, but this trip on soft ground may not be ideal. Lots of the other are also unproven on soft ground, therefore an each-way bet on Endless Time could be the way forward.
