2017 Qatar King George Stakes Preview And Tip

The King George Stakes (Friday 4 August, 3.35) is a Group 2 race run over 5-furlongs at Goodwood, and the inaugural running took place in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of England’s then latest king, King George V.

It is seen as an ideal preparation for the Nunthorpe Stakes at York later in the month, though the last winner to complete the double was 1993 winner Lochsong.

Winners have been aged 3 to 9

Winners have been drawn in stalls ranging from 2 to 14

Only 3 winners had won last time out

Take Cover has won 2 of the last 3 renewals, finishing second in the other

Ryan Moore has ridden 2 of the last 10 winners

SPs have ranged from 3/1 to 10/1

Runner-By-Runner Guide

Final Venture

Improving 5-year-old who has already won on soft ground this season, and was only half-a-length behind Take Cover last time.

Glass Office

Group 2 winner over 6-furlongs on soft ground, but not really hinted that he would improve for a drop to 5-furlongs.

Has won three-times over 5-furlongs, but recent form suggests he is better over 6-furlongs, and he’s finished behind several of these this season already.

Has some very decent form in the book but, though she’s won with a bit of cut in the ground, her best form is on faster ground. Also finished behind several of these at Royal Ascot.

Finished runner-up at Royal Ascot between Lady Aurelia and Marsha, and the fact that he won a Group 1 on soft ground in 2016 makes him a major contender.

Take Cover

Loves this race, but connections will be gutted that the ground has turned soft, as his best form is on quicker going.

Washington DC

Disappointed on his last two starts, but came back to form in this race last year when just touched-off by Take Cover. Another unproven on the ground though, and not bred to appreciate it.

Won a Grup 2 on soft going as a two-year-old, but was beaten pointless by Battaash last time, be it on quick going.

Didn’t look anything exciting as a two-year-old, but smashed the track record when winning last time at Sandown. Very exciting sprinting prospect, but another for whom the ground is an unknown factor.

Kyllang Rock

Handles soft ground well, but finds little off the bridle. Could sneak a place at a big price, but likely something will prove tougher.

Her trainer said she’s a fast ground filly before royal Ascot, and she ran respectably in third behind Lady Aurelia and Priceless. Only fifth here last year though.

Quite a lot to find on the figures, but is 2 from 2 at Goodwood, and likely to outrun her odds.

The likes of Battaash, Marsha and Take Cover all have chances but, as they would all prefer fast ground, this looks a great opportunity for Priceless to get his head back in front.
