Magnolia Stakes Runner-By-Runner Guide
Winner of a Scandinavian Group-3, but struggled on previous visit to Britain, and has to carry a penalty for his group-race win.
Has his first run for trainer Ruth Carr, but this new trip of 10-furlongs is likely to be too far for a horse who has always looked best at 7-Furlongs or a mile.
Officially the highest-rated horse in the field and, as a course winner, he is likely to run his race. However, he has the widest draw to contend with, and some potential improvers.
Beaten by the re-opposing Viren’s Army last year, but interesting that he was sent-off favourite for that race. His trainer John Gosden has a great record in the race, and he showed his skill in bringing one back after a break when Jack Hobbs won the Sheema Classic last weekend. Wears first-time blinkers.
Having his first run for trainer Marco Botti having plied his trade in Italy recently. Not much to find on official-ratings, though it’s very hard to quantify the merit of his Italian form in the context of this race.
Likeable sort who has won four-times in Britain and Meydan, and beat Linguistic by a short-head on identical terms the only time they’ve previously met. Also has the advantage of a recent run, though that hasn’t been a prerequisite to success in recent renewals. Wears first-time cheek-pieces.
Creditable third in the Winter Derby gives her every chance, and she was an easy winner of her only course start.
New trainer Ralph Beckett is a very good with fillies, but he’ll need to have improved this one a few pounds for her to get competitive against some decent opposition.
Magnolia Stakes Summary
Absolute Blast and Fire Fighting both boast decent all-weather form, though they could both be vulnerable to the Godolphin pair of Viren’s Army and Linguistic. Viren’s Army probably has the stronger form of the two, but Linguistic looks a likely improver this year for John Gosden, who boasts a terrific record in the race.
