2017 John Of Gaunt Stakes Preview And Tip
The John Of Gaunt Stakes (Saturday 10 June, 16:05) is a Group 3 Race run over 7 furlongs and 37 yards ay Haydock, and it derives its name from the First Duke Of Lancaster.
Winners have been aged 4 to 9
Only 3 winners had won last time out
Winners had all run in the last 35 days
SPs have ranged from 10/11 to 33/1
8 of the last 10 winners were drawn in either stalls 1, 2 or 3
None of the last 8 winners carried a penalty
Ryan Moore has ridden 3 of the last 9 winners
A 5lb penalty is a concern, especially as he has been well-beaten in the last two renewals when not carrying a penalty. On the plus side, he should relish the ground, and ran one of his best races of his career last time when third in the Lockinge.
Has a 3lb penalty to contend with, and had a straightforward task when winning his only course and distance start at odds of 1/3. No problem with conditions though, but possible drawn wider than ideal in stall 8.
Talented by quirky individual who was an excellent second over course and distance here in May. Stable in good form too, and favourable draw in stall 3.
Over a stone to find with a few of these, and an unlikely winner.
Officially the top-rated horse, and gets weight from the next two highest rated horses. Entitled to win on the form of his second to The Tin Man in a Group 1, but slightly disappointing on seasonal debut, and wins have come over 6 furlongs.
Has won over further, but doesn’t really look to stay this trip other than at Chester, Trainer does well here, but difficult draw in stall 9.
Ran well all three course starts over a mile, has won over 7furlongs, and handles any cut. Ryan Moore a very interesting booking for a horse that needs some stoking, and could go well from stall 2.
Course winner who has been third on his last two course starts. Travels well, and could really appreciate it if the likes of Hillbilly Boy sets a strong pace.
That Is The Spirit
Course and distance winner who looks well-drawn in stall 1, but he was only sixth in this in 2015, and this renewal looks every bit as strong.
Mitchum Swagger looks a decent fit for the stats with Ryan Moore aboard for the first time, and a decent draw in stall-2, however it’s worrying that his best form recently has been over a mile. The distance is also a worry for Growl whose wins have come at 6-furlongs, whilst Breton Rock and Jallota must carry penalties. Therefore, it could be worth chancing dual course and distance winner So Beloved, who could relish having the speedy Hillbilly Boy setting the pace.
