It was first run in 1915, and famous winners have included dual winners Vintage Crop, Kayf Tara and Oscar Schindler, whilst the race is most synonymous with Vinnie Roe who won four consecutive renewals between 2001 and 2004.

Runner-By-Runner Guide

Well-bred but exposed 7-year-old, who has little chance as he is rated 24lb inferior to the top-rated horse.

Classy individual who has beaten the likes of Wicklow Brave, Simple Verse and Highland Reel over the last year or so. He’s also the second highest rated horse, and could give the favourite plenty to think about if Seamie Hefferman is positive on him from the outset. Best form also going right-handed.

Lord Yeats

Much improved 4-year-old on soft ground early in the season, but well-beaten in a Group 3 and a top-class handicap since.

Order Of St George

The 2015 winner bids to become the first horse to regain this title after finishing second in a messy 4-runner renewal last season. Likely winner if at his best, though does throw in the odd bad run.

The Tartan Spartan

Listed winner over this trip, and is 1 from 1 for today’s jockey. However, has 18lb to find with Order of St George, and looks too exposed to suddenly find that improvement.

2 from 2 at this trip, and beat Order Of St George earlier in the season. Ran with great credit in the Ascot Gold Cup on last run, and at least an each-way chance if fully-fit after 80 days off the track.

Twilight Payment

Finished over 7-lengths behind Order Of St George in a trial for his race last time, and no reason why he should reverse those placings.

Western Hymn

Only 6-year-old in the field, but has always looked happiest at Listed or Group 3 Level.

Wicklow Brave

Benefitted from a masterful Frankie Dettori ride when winning last year and, after finishing a long way behind Order Of St George last time, he’s unlikely to add his name to the list of multiple winners.

Mount Moriah

Impressive winner of a handicap at this trip off a mark of 93, and now rated 106. That leaves him rated a stone behind Order Of St George, but gets 9lb from his elders.

Order Of St George is the obvious one but, having been beaten in last year’s renewal, he will have to become the first horse to regain the title. Therefore, Dartmouth look a solid each-way alternative.
