2017 Grimthorpe Chase Preview And Tips
The Grimthorpe Chase (Saturday 3.35) is a Grand National Trial run over 3-miles and 2-furlongs at Doncaster. The last 10 winners have been aged 8 to 11, with 9-year-olds accounting for four of those wins. Meanwhile, although two winners have carried 11-12 to victory in the last 10 years, 6 of the last 10 carried between 10-0 and 10-10.
7 runners are set to go to post for the 2017 Grimthorpe Chase.
The Last Samuri
2 of the last 10 winners of this race have carried 11-12 to victory, one of which was the Last Samuri last season, though he is 12lb higher in the weights this time around. There was much to like about his third in the Becher Chase in November, where he also carried top-weight, and the form has been boosted since with big wins for the winner Vieux Lion Rouge and fifth-placed One For Arthur.
Looked to be coming back to form when second two starts ago at Wetherby, but had a hard race in Betfred National Trial at Haydock when finding the pace two strong and pulling-up. He’s also 0 from 4 at Doncaster.
Won 4 races in 2016, but unseated last time when looking held behind Bristol De Mai. This looks easier, but he is 8lb higher than when last successful two starts ago at Wetherby. Never raced at Doncaster before.
Capable on his day, but this kind of grade often finds him out. The handicapper has dropped him 4lb, which can only help, but he’s still 6lb higher than his last winning mark. First run at Doncaster.
8lb higher than last winning mark, but 2lb lower than when sent-off favourite for the race won by Defintely Red at Wetherby. Made a couple of mistakes that day and, with a clear round, could get a lot closer. Another for whom this will be his first run at Doncaster, and his stable have been in great form this week. Only a 7-year-old.
Not been at his best in 3 runs so far this season, but the 9-year-old is now down to a mark 1lb lower than when successful over 3-miles here. He was beaten 17-lengths into fourth in this event last year by The Last Samuri, but is fully 20lb better off with the re-opposing winner, and gets to carry the lightest-weight of his career so far.
Up another 5lb for finishing second to Ziga Boy here last time, but is still at the foot of the weights, and looked sure to appreciate this extra couple of furlongs judging by the way he ran on there. Every chance
2017 Grimthorpe Chase Summary
The Last Samuri ran an excellent race in the Becher Chase when last seen, but is rated 12lb higher than when winning last year’s renewal. That might just give the advantage to the lighter-weighted horses, with Sego Success and Looking Well preferred. Looking Well ran really well here last time in the Sky Bet Handicap Chase, and must go close. However, it could be worth chancing Sego Success who is 1lb below his last winning mark, and gets to carry the lightest-weight of his career.
