2017 Dubai World Cup Preview And Tip

The 2017 Dubai World Cup is the 22nd running of what is now the world’s second richest horse race, and takes place at Meydan Racecourse at 4.45pm on Saturday 25 March. The 21,000,000 AED first-prize (around £4.64 Million) has tempted the connections of the world’s best horse Arrogate to send over their star 2016 Breeders’ Cup Claasic winner – and he should be very hard to beat as he attempts to add his name to some of the better winners of this race in Cigar, Singspiel, Dubai Millenium and California Chrome.

Runners from the US already have an outstanding record having won 10 of the 21 previous renewals, whilst 4-year-olds have won 8 of those renewals.

14 Horses are set to line-up for the 2017 Dubai World Cup

Apollo Kentucky
Japanese horse (one previous Japanese winner) who has done most of his racing on dirt, and won half of his 18 races. Has a bit to find on rating with several above him, but nicely drawn in stall-one.

Long River
Front-runner who looks ideally placed in stall-2 to try and repeat his course and distance win in a Group 1. Might sulk against this quality of opposition though, and tends to blowout when he does.

Gold Dream
Remains unexposed after just 9 starts, and this 4-year-old is 5 from 9 in his native Japan. Grade-1 winner over a mile last time, but needs to find more to hit the frame.

Lani
Temperamental, if talented, Japanese horse who won a weak renewal of the UAE Derby last year, after which he was a creditable third in the Belmont as he took in the Tripe Crown. Showed his temperamental side last time when behind Long River, but Ryan Moore stays loyal to him.

Gun Runner
Classy individual from the US runner who likes to front run. However, as his best form is over 8 and 9 furlongs, the presence of other front-runners may mean he’s running on empty when the closers bear down on him.

Move Up
Trainer Saeed Bin Suroor has trained 7 winners of the Dubai World Cup, including the 2014 and 2015 winners. However, this one’s best performances came over 12-furlongs in both England and Turkey, and he was only fourth behind Long River last time.

Awardee
Officially the highest-rated of the Japanese horses, but was beaten by Appollo Kentucky last time, and may not revise those placing with his fellow Japanese horse better-drawn here.

Furia Cruzada
Winner over 9½ furlongs already in Meydan this winter, but another who was held by Long River in one of the recognised trails.

Arrogate
Was well-backed to beat last year’s winner California Chrome in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Classic, and mowed him down late-on. His style of running should be well-suited to the way the race is likely to be run, with multiple front-runners in the race, and he’s head and shoulders above the rest on ratings. He also won the inaugural running of the world’s richest race, The Pegasus World Cup last time.

Keen Ice
Best known for being the only horse to beat Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah, but could finish only eighth in the 2016 renewal, and finished 11-lengths behind Arrogate last time.

Neolithic
Another to contest the Pagasus World Cup, finishing 8-lengths behind Arrogate. His best form is also over shorter, and he may be vulnerable in the final furlong, especially from a wide-draw.

Hoppertunity
Ran on to be third last year from similar wide-draw, and he’ll be hoping they go fast up front to bring his stamina into play. Doubt he’ll be good enough to repel Arrogate, but could get a place.

Special Fighter
Fourth in this last year, and not disgraced in second behind Long River last time. Likes to be up near the pace though, and stall-13 no help in that regard.

Mubtaahij

Second last year, and his trainer looks to have primed him for this race this year after warming-up in a handicap last time. Only finished a head in front of Hoppertunity last year though, and has the worst of the draw this time around.

2017 Dubai World Cup Summary

This look sure to be run at a decent pace, and this should play into the hands of the two Bob Baffert trained runners Arrogate and Hoppertunity. The “Money-Buyers” will be out with wheelbarrows of cash to back Arrogate, whilst value-seekers may want to play the forecast.
