2017 Doncaster Cup Trends And Tip
The Doncaster Cup (Friday 15 Sept, 3.35) has been around longer than the St Leger, and was first run in 1766. The highlight of Day-3 of Doncaster’s St Leger Meeting is now a Group 2, and takes place over 2 Miles 1 Furlong and 197 Yards.
Its most famous winner is 4-time winner Beeswing, whilst Double Trigger won it 3 times in the 1990’s.
Winners this century have been as young as 3 and as old as 10
The last 10 winners have been drawn between stalls 1 and 10, though stall 4 has produced the winner in 3 of the last 5 renewals
Only 3 of the last 10 winners had won last time out
Ryan Moore has ridden 3 of the last 8 winners
SPs of the last 10 winners have ranged from 11/10 to 11/2
Won this year’s Chester Cup over this sort of trip, and took form to a whole new level when winning a Group 2 at York last time at 16/1. Handles a bit of cut, but has a 3lb to carry, and worrying that he finished last of 15 on his only previous run here.
Won his maiden here, but only fourth and seventh in the last two renewals of this, and looked in decline this season.
6lb better off with Montaly for a length beating in the Chester Cup, and back to form in France last time. However, he was only fourth in the 2015 renewal behind Pallasator.
Only fifth behind Montaly at York, but has better form here at Doncaster, including a win, and two runner-up finishes in this race in 2012 and 2013. Could outrun his odds.
Won a weaker renewal in 2015, and not at best this season. However, first-time cheek-pieces suggest this has always been a big target. Drawn in stall-4.
Last year’s winner relished the long straight here, but doesn’t arrive in as good a form this season, with stable also struggling for winners in September.
Distance no problem after winning the Ascot Stakes, but ran far too freely at York when miles behind Montaly last time. Won only course start when with John Gosden though, and Ryan Moore back on board could make the difference.
She Is No Lady
Second on only course start, and proved stamina with excellent runs in both the Ascot Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup, finishing in front of both Sheikzayedroad and Pallasator.
Excellent placings on last two runs after being stepped up in trip, and finished in front of She Is No Lady, Sheikhzayedroad and Pallasator in the Goodwood Cup. Worse off at the weights with those 3, but every chance with Silvestre De Sousa booked for the first time.
The last two winners Sheikzayedroad and Pallasator will have to rediscover their best form, whilst Montaly’s 3lb penalty and worrying course form put me off. Meanwhile, She Is No Lady and Desert Skyline should go close, whilst High Jinx goes well here. However, Thomas Hobson is preferred as he boasts a 50% strike-rate on turf, handles any sort of ground, and has Ryan Moore back in the saddle.
