2017 Chipchase Stakes Preview And Tip

The Chipchase Stakes (Saturday 1 July, 14:25 Newcastle) is a 6-Furlong Group 3 Race that used to be run in turf, but is now run on the all-weather course at Newcastle. It is only of only four group races run on all-weather surfaces currently in England.

Last Year’s Winner Stats

The 4-year-old Markzaz won at 9/2, from stall 1, carrying 9-3.

Runner-By-Runner Guide

Won this race the last time it was run on turf in 2015, after which he has run 14 times without further success. Yet to run on the Tapeta surface here, but ran okay at Linfield when tried on the all-weather track there. This is much easier than the group races he has been contesting recently, and he has a chance.

Don’t Touch

Winner of 7 of his 11 races at this trip and, though he seemed to get outstayed over 7 furlong last time, this stiff 6-furlongs should play to his strengths. Finished only 2 lengths behind The Tin Man two starts ago, and has an obvious chance.

Final Venture

Listed winner, who was beaten in Group 1 and Group 2 company either side of that, and this improving sort will go well if seeing out the trip now back up in trip to this stiff 6-furlongs.

Generally seen in handicaps, and flopped on his only attempt at Listed Level. This another rung up the ladder, and has something to find.

Officially rated 4lb lower than stablemate Don’t Touch, but he was an impressive winner of the All-Weather Sprint Final at Lingfield, and is unbeaten in two starts on the all-weather. Tapeta is a completely different surface though.

Group 2 winner who has some of the best form in the book in this field. However, had more than a year off the track, and may need this.

Admirable sort who has yet to try his arm on the all-weather. Bit to find at the weights, and not the most obvious winner.

Frustrating sort who tends to run well most of the time, but rarely wins. However, well-behind Final Venture last time.

Perfect Pasture

7-year-old who has improved since last seen on the all-weather, and was a shock winner of a Listed Race last time, with Intisaab amongst those beaten. Also throws in the odd stinker, and hard to know what he’ll make of this further step up in class.

Solar Flair

Fallen short when stepped up to this sort of level before, and plenty to find.

As the only 3-year-old in the field, he gets weight from all his rivals, but he’s fallen short at Listed and Group Level so far.

Final Venture should go close, but this could come down to a tussle between the Richard Fahey trained horses Kimbrella and Don’t Touch. Paul Hanagan rides the former, and was onboard when he won the All-weather Sprint Final, however Tony Hamilton gets a decent tune out of the top-rated Don’t Touch, who could be hard to pass if taking to the Tapeta.
