2017 Champion Chase Preview And Tip
The 2017 Champion Chase (Wednesday 3.30) is many people’s idea of the best race of the week, as horses going flat-out over 2miles and 12 fences. It’s a race that Paul Nicholls and Nicky Henderson have teach trained the winner of 3-times in the last 10 years but, with neither of them represented here, the race is expected to result in a first Champion Chase success for Willie Mullins.
10 Horses are set to go to post for the 2017 Champion Chase.
Douvan has been long odds-on ever since the retirement of Sprinter Sacre, and the “Ex-Terrestial” as he is known by some has done nothing but enhance his unbeaten reputation since. Even those who questioned the fact that he kept beating the same horses over-and-over have had to eat their words, with last year’s Arkle second and third Sizing John and Fox Norton both registering high-class successes this season.
Not thought to be anything special when finishing third behind Douvan at both Cheltenham and Aintree in his novice season, but destroyed a decent field of handicappers off 146 on his seasonal debut, and then beat the likes of Special Tiara next time. No match for Altior on his return from injury, and unlikely to get any closer to Douvan here.
Garde La Victoire
Likeable sort who is a former Greatwood Hurdle winner at Cheltenham, but he fell in last year’s JLT. Jumped better this season so far, but may again be found out in the heat of the most-intense of battles.
Beat Vautour last season at Aintree, and connections must have thought long and hard about running him in the Ryan Air this season after finishing fourth in last year’s Champion Chase. Surely won’t live with Douvan early-doors, but could easily pick the others up late-on if they try to take to Douvan on.
Likeable sort who will like the ground but, having finished well-behind Douvan and Fox Norton this season, it’s hard to see him hitting the frame.
Won the Haldon Gold Cup by a neck getting 4lb from runner-up Garde La Victoire, but put in his place by Un Des Sceaux and Special Tiara since. Plenty to find.
Done absolutely nothing to suggest he should be running in this, and may be in the field as a pacemaker for Fox Norton or to give Douvan something to think about early door, if he can live with him.
His front-running tactics certainly unsettled Un Des Sceaux last season, but Douvan could be at least a stone better than this stablemate, and has yet to turn a hair at anything.
The form of his defeat of Dodging Bullets last season has been shown to not be as good as at first it looked, and he probably lacks a bit of toe on good ground to get involved.
Finished a decent third behind Un Des Sceaux last season at Ascot, but will do well to trouble the judge after finishing last on his two most recent starts.
2017 Champion Chase Summary
Douvan is expected to win comfortably barring mishap and, if you’re not one for emptying the wheel barrow on at ridiculously short-odds, it may be a case of picking one for the forecast or just settling for the place win on an each-way shot. My idea for both of those bets would be Gods Own.
