1,000 Guineas Horse Racing Preview

With rain forecast at Newmarket, conditions are likely to be slower for today’s 1,000 Guineas than yesterday’s 2,000 Guineas.

The draw was debatable yesterday, as the two best horses probably finished first and second, though high-numbers in general looked to have a slight advantage. However, there are less runners today and that may negate that advantage.

Here’s the lowdown on all the 13 runners:

There has been lots of ante-post money for the Charlie Hills horse, and in her three races as a 2-year-old she always looked likely to be a better 3-year-old, especially when second in last year’s Rockfel Stakes when 1 length behind Lucida.

Irish Rookie

You never know how good any unbeaten horse could be, but is a stone behind a few of these on ratings.

Jellicle Ball

John Gosden’s charge looks sure to appreciate running over a mile for the first time, and one of the few runners in the field who may possess the extra stamina to get home if the ground turns softer.

Ryan Moore is looking for a guineas double aboard David Wachman’s filly who has proven stamina after winning over 1 mile 1 furlong on her last run, and fitness is guaranteed.

Local Time

Won her last 6 races but she probably hasn’t beat anything of note. All wins on fast ground, though breeding suggests she may handle any give underfoot.

Jim Bolger has trained her like a very good horse and her form with Cursory Glance in Ireland last year looks rock solid. The mile trip should be easily within her compass, though she disappointed on her one run on soft ground.

Trainer Mick Channon has had a few good fillies in his time, and this one wouldn’t have to find too much to have a chance here. Possible each-way shout.

One of the few Richard Hannon horses to win first time out this year, and could well find a few pounds improvement over her course win in the Nell Gwynn. Won on good to soft, too.

Didn’t look a likely candidate until Aiden O’Brien’s other runners were withdrawn, and will have had to improved greatly for her winter break to win this.

Queen Neffertiti

David Wachman’s second string on paper, though looked quite impressive on debut before finishing 3rd on her second start.

Beat Jellicle Ball on her seasonal reappearance, and he sire Cockney Rebel was a big-priced winner of the 2,000 Guineas. Perhaps underestimated for trainer Ralph Beckett who has already won one fillies classic.

Won twice on good to soft for big connections, and has a chance.

Tiggy Wiggy

One of the stars of 2014, but is unlikely to stay, and surely has no chance of doing so if the ground turns soft.

The Tip

Any softening of the ground would be a concern for Lucida and Fadhayyil, but any added emphasis on stamina would play to the strengths of Jellicle Ball who had been the subject of glowing gallops reports before her reappearance run, which strongly suggested she’d love stepping up to this sort of trip for the first time – and she looks the value at 9/1

  1. Firstly, the going at Newmarket WILL be slower than yesterday. It’s hammering down here just now (10am ) & looks more to come ……..
Nice 1000 guineas review!! . Although I am not having a BET in race, my interest will be Jellicle Ball. For same reasons you gave & J.Gosden is a master with fillies & as with recent seasons his horses seem well forward ….. Also like the turn of foot she displayed when powering away to win on debut.
    Good luck ….. Kevin
