While radio struggles to find its place in today’s interconnected world, podcasts continue to go from strength to strength. Are podcasts the new radio? Well they certainly have advantages over the old medium, including cheaper production costs and lower barriers to entry. As a result there are a huge number of podcasts available covering just about every sport from ice hockey to show jumping.
However, due to the low cost of entry there are a large number of, how shall we say it, not so great podcasts. So in this post we thought it would be fun to look at the top five podcasts for UK sports fans in 2018. We’ve chosen one podcast for each of the major sports: football, boxing, horse racing, F1 and golf, so there is something here for everyone.
So without further ado, here’s our list of the top five podcasts for 2018:
Pound for Pound
Hosted by award-winning Eastenders bad boy Jake Wood and his best mate, former Super Bantamweight Champion, Spencer Oliver, Pound for Pound is an entertaining no-holds-barred look at the world of boxing.
Each week the hosts sit down with top names from the sport along with celebrity fans to talk about upcoming fights and the latest boxing news. You can expect expert analysis of the latest fights from Oliver, who, let’s face it, has been there and done it. There’s also hilarious and somewhat irreverent commentary from Wood, who is a former boxer himself.
Pound for Pound is a must-listen for all boxing fans and should give you a heads up on the prospects for the latest fights.

Football fans are spoilt for choice when it comes to football podcasts, with a just about every team in the premiership having a specialist podcast about them. Whether it’s Alan Davies’ hilarious Arsenal themed show the Tuesday Club or the eponymous Newcastle Chatter, footie fans are not short of options.
But when it comes to choosing a general football podcast, it’s hard to beat the new Post 2 Post podcast, which is hosted by a quartet of knowledgeable soccer nuts: Conor, Chris, James & Matt.
Each week the guys sit down to talk all things football, with insight into the big matches along with commentary and news from all the clubs in the Premier League along with major Championship matches. But of course as a sports bettor, you are going to mostly be interested in the weekly score predictions.
If you’re looking for entertaining, knowledgeable insight into the Premier League along with weekly game predictions, Post 2 Post is not to be missed.

This podcast is quite new but it has very quickly established itself as one of the best golfing podcasts around. It is hosted by Geoff Shackleford who some listeners will know from his other excellent podcast series State of the Game.
Shackhouse focuses on world golf championship news rather than national events, but it goes further than merely talking about who won last week and who’s going to win next. Shackleford likes to talk about technique and equipment along with providing expert insight and analysis into the players and their current form.
While you will have to suffer advertisements from the likes of Callaway, Shackhouse is a must-listen for any serious golf fan during the Masters or US Open weeks.

There aren’t many F1 podcasts, although numbers may improve with the change of ownership of Formula One media rights, but there is one that really stands out. Sidepodcast is an entertaining look at this most glamorous of sports. Hosted by Christine Blatchford, it provides excellent analysis and commentary of races.
While Sidepodcast doesn’t have the same level of access to the drivers as the major TV networks, they do carry out regular interviews with engineers and team managers. This can give you deep insight into the sport which goes way beyond what you get from the general media.
The other thing you get from Christine is that she is a real F1 fan – you don’t get the impression that she is just along for the ride. Her passion and knowledge are obvious and her enthusiasm is infectious. Production values are also high, considering this is a one girl show.
Sidepodcast is one of the best F1 podcasts out there and is a must-listen for every F1 fan.
