It looks like you may as well give Colin Tizzard the trophy now as rivals for his star novice and Gold Cup favourite Thisltecrack continue to drop like flies. Following the news of Coneygree’s injury earlier this week that ruled the 2015 winner out of March’s showpiece, it was announced today that Don Cossack, last year’s winner, has been retired and will not take his place in the race either.
Reaction to that news has seen Thistlecrack’s odds tumble for the big race, with Oddschecker saying:
“Bookmakers reacted by cutting Thistlecrack to as short as 8/11 in places, with BetStars a standout even money about the Colin Tizzard-trained King George winner. Coral cut Thistlecrack into 4/5 from Evens”
Tizzard appears to hold all the aces with Hennessy and Welsh National winner Native River – cut from 7/1 to 5/1 today – and multiple Grade One hero Cue Card both under the Sherborne trainer’s care, next up in the betting.
Bookies and punters alike can’t see past the favourite and he looks likely to be the first horse to go off at odds-on since the mighty Kauto Star back in 2008.
