The Travelers Championship Golf Preview

The Travelers Championship is hosted by the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, a Par 70 course measuring just 6,841 yards, which is short by modern standards in the professional game.

The Travelers Championship

The Golden Triangle is the feature the course is most famous for and holes 15, 16 and 17, and the lake they intertwine with, often provide a dramatic finish come Sunday afternoon.

Despite two of the last 10 winners topping the driving distance statistics, length hasn’t been an attribute of most winners, and it’s fair to say that all types of golfers can compete here.

At the head of the market, both Brandon Grace and Brooks Koepka catch the eye. However, recent renewals haven’t been won by anyone who was in contention at the preceding US Open, and it may well be a similar scenario for two players who finished high up on the leaderboard at last week’s US PGA Championship.

One player who does make plenty of appeal at the head of the market though is Bubba Watson and, though he’s yet to defend a title, this will probably be where it happens if he is to do it. His course form reads 6/14/1/38/2/4/31/1 – and I can’t see any reason to leave him out of the staking plan this week

Next best is Paul Casey who, after a couple of quiet months, has been playing well recently with two top-20s in his last 3 events. He also took an immediate shine to this venue last year, when finishing second, and looks a good bet to go one better.

Brian Harman also got to grips with the course last year when finishing third and, though it may just be a coincidence, he’s also left-handed just like Watson. His form has been solid if unspectacular of late finishing 25/33/29/8/27, but he could well get into the money again with another solid tee-to-green performance.

Completing this week’s staking plan is John Curran. He may not be the most consistent of players, but his tenth here last year was one of his highlights, and it’s only 5 tournaments since he finished second, and I’m happy to take the 12/1 for him to finish top-10 once again.

Bubba Watson 1.5 Points each-way @ 14/1 (Stan James) ¼ odds 6 places

Paul Casey 1.5 Points each-way @ 28/1 (Betfred) ¼ odds 5 places

Brian Harman 1 Point each-way @ 70/1 (Betfred) ¼ odds 5 places

John Curran 2 Points Top-10 Finish @ 12/1 (Bet365, Betfred, BetVictor, Paddy Power)
