French Open Tennis Final Preview

Sunday at 1pm has already been firmly pencilled into the diary of all tennis fans, and many more millions of casual viewers will be tuning into the French Open Tennis Final now that both Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray are set to do battle in the latest chapter of their tennis rivalry.

French Open

World Number One Djokovic will be bidding to become the latest tennis player to join the illustrious list of players who have won all four men’s grand slams, whilst Murray will be hoping to become only the second British player to win the title, with Fred Perry being the only other one way back in 1935.

Previous Head-To-Heads

This will be the thirty-fourth time Djokovic and Murray have clashed, and it is Djokovic who holds a convincing head-to-head lead with 23 victories to Murray’s 10. However, that record improves significantly when you take into consideration that he has won 12 of the last 14. However, Murray will take plenty of confidence from winning their latest match in Rome 6-3 6-3.

Clay Court Matches Record

Murray will again be pinning his hopes on that last victory on clay in Rome, as that’s his only victory in the 5 matches they’ve played on clay. Murray hasn’t played badly in those matches though, taking all but their first match on clay to the deciding set, despite Djokovic winning the first set in the first four of those matches.

Grand Slam Meetings

The pair have met in 8 Grand Slam tournaments, with Djokovic holding a 6-2 lead.

Finals Record

This will be the seventeenth time the pair have clashed in a final, and Murray can take more motivation from the fact he has won 7 of those previous 16 finals, including that last one in Rome, and 2 of the last 3. Six of those finals have also been Grand Slam finals and, though Djokovic has won all four Australian Open Finals they’ve contested, Murray has beaten him in the final of the US Open and at Wimbledon.

Outright Betting

The Bookies are offering a best-priced 1/3 about Djokovic winning, whilst Murray is a best-priced 13/5.

Djokovic 3-0 @ 13/8

Djokovic 3-1 @ 11/4

Djokovic 3-2 @ 11/2

Murray 3-0 @ 8/1

Murray 3-1 @ 8/1

Murray 3-2 @ 12/1

French Open Tennis Final Summary

Djokovic has had the easier games in his run to the final, but has had a busier schedule due to the rain delays. Meanwhile, Murray looked shaky in his first couple of matches but has risen to the big occasion in the second week, culminating in a stunning semi-final performance against Wawrinka – and this could be closer than the bookies odds suggest, especially if Djokovic is feeling the pressure of completing the slam. Murray may well be able to take advantage if he is, and this could well be a humdinger of a closely fought game – and I’d sooner back both players to win 3-2.
