Davis Cup Final 2017 Preview And Tips

The 2017 David Cup Final (24-26 November) will be contested between France and Belgium. The teams have very different Davis Cup pedigrees though, with France being 9-times winners and 8-times runner-up, whilst the best Belgium have managed is runner-up in both 1904 and 2015.

David Cup Final Line-Ups

A late injury to doubles-specialist Nicolas Mahut has seen French Captain Yannick Noah replace him with Richard Gasquet, who will team-up with Pierre-Hughes Herbert in the double rubber. However, it will be interesting to see whether Noah is tempted to used Gasquet’s experience in the second round of singles rubbers if first-choice singles players Jo-Wilfred Tsonga or Lucas Pouille don’t impress.

Belgian Captain Johan van Herck also made a substitution, with Joris de Loore replacing Arthur de Greef to partner Ruben Bemelmans in the doubles team. However, neither of the Belgian doubles players are likely to be considered for the singles matches, which will be played by David Goffin and Steve Darcis.

Davis Cup Final Draw (Players may be changed)

The Davis Cup Final starts on Friday, with Lucas Pouille and David Goffin due on court at 1pm. Jo-Wilfred Tsonga will then take on Steve Darcis. The doubles rubber will then be played on Saturday, with the remaining two singles runners on Sunday.

Lucas Pouille v David Goffin
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v Steve Darcis

Richard Gasquet & Pierre-Hugues Herbert v Ruben Bemelmans & Joris de Loore

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga v David Goffin
Lucas Pouille v Steve Darcis

Singles Head To Heads

Lucas Pouille 3 David Goffin 0
Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 1 Steve Darcis 0
Jo Wilfred Tsonga 4 David Goffin 2
Lucas Pouille 0 Steve Darcis 0

Steve Darcis doesn’t have much form against his French opponents, having never previously played Pouille, and having retired against Tsonga in their only match way back in 2002. However, world-rankings suggest the world number 76 will have his work cut out to beat either world number 15 Tsonga or world number 18 Pouille. If that’s the case, then Belgium’s chance falls squarely on the shoulders of David Goffin. The world number 7 has been in terrific form of late, but it’s asking a lot of him to arrive here at his best after a big week last week when he finished runner-up at the ATP Tour Finals, where he had to play Federer, Nadal and Dimitrov (twice). He also trails Tsonga 4-2 in head to heads, though they’ve shared their last 4 matches, but the fact he’s lost all 3 of his previous matches with Pouille means Belgium look to have a difficult task.
