Can Murray Win A Second Wimbledon?

Andy Murray’s fifth Queen’s Club Victory has again posed the question of whether he can claim a second Wimbledon Title this year, to add to the one he won in 2013 – so let’s see how his record adds-up against the world’s current top-10 tennis players.

Richard Gasquet

The world number 10 has been in decent form of late, and has a decent Wimbledon record, but it is Murray who has won their last 5 encounters. He’s also won their only two matches on grass, beating Gasquet in 5-sets in 2008 and in 3-sets in 2011.

Tomas Berdych

The Czech has slipped down the rankings this year and, though he only trails Murray 8-6, it is Murray who has won their last four head-to-heads, including the last 3 in straight sets. The pair have never met on grass but, though Berdych is a past finalist at Wimbledon, he’s not put on much of a show on grass in recent years.

Dominic Thiem

The young Austria is the most improved player on the circuit in the past couple of seasons, and recently added a grass-court win to his CV in Stuttgart, beating Roger Federer on route. However, Murray has beaten him 2-1 both times they’ve met, and probably has more stamina than Thiem if it was required.

Milos Raonic

The big-serving Canadian reached the final of the Australian Open, but hasn’t done that much of note since. He fared quite well against Murray in their early encounters, but Murray has won the last 5, including beating him at Queens this year.

Kei Nishikori

Murray holds a 6-1 lead over the Japanese player, including winning the last 3. They’ve never met on grass, but this is arguably Nishikori’s worst surface, and he withdrew in Stuttgart in his last grass-court  tournament.

Stan Wawrinka

Murray holds a slender 9-7 lead over the Swiss number 2, and ended a run of three straight losses to him when beating him in the semi-finals of the French Open. That’s a good indicator to just how well Murray is playing, and he can also draw on the fact he’s won both their previous grass-court matches.

Rafa Nadal

The Spaniard has always been a player against whom Murray has struggled, losing all 3 times they’ve met at Wimbledon in 2008, 2010 and 2011. However, Nadal isn’t the player he was then, and Murray won their only match this season.

Roger Federer

The darling of Wimbledon holds a 14-11 lead over Murray, including the last 5 encounters, however he’s looked woefully out of form since returning from injury. He lost to Thiem in Stuttgart and then Zverev at Halle and, though he’s sure to give his all at Wimbledon, Murray can avenge his 2012 Final defeat and 2015 semi-final defeat should they meet. He can also draw on his 2012 Olympic final win.

Novak Djokovic

Andy Murray must be sick of the sight of Novak Djokovic, as his trophy cabinet would be bursting if he hadn’t been around. However, despite trailing 10-24 in their head-to-heads, and only winning one of their last 6 matches, he has beaten Djokovic in straight sets in both their grass-court encounters, which were the Olympic Semi-Final in 2012 and the Wimbledon Final of 2013.

This could well be Murray’s year, as neither of his old foes Nadal and Federer look in the form to win another Wimbledon. Meanwhile, if he meets Djokovic in the final, he must draw tremendous encouragement from the fact he’s beaten the world number one in straight sets in both their previous grass court matches – making the 7/2 for a Murray win look good value this year!
