ATP Houston Preview

The ATP Houston, also known as the Fayez Sarofim & Co US Men’s Clay Court Championship, is the only clay court tournament still played in America. However, despite the fact that clay seems the America’s least favourite surface, Americans have an excellent record in the event. Since the turn of the Millennium, they have won 8 of the 15 renewals, and provided a further 8 runner-ups. However, this is not an event that has been dominated by one or two Americans and, though Andy Roddick has won 3 titles, there have been 6 different winners, which comprise Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish, Ryan Sweeting, John Isner and Jack Sock. Isner and Sock are prominent in this year’s betting, and it’s time to take a look at some of the leading protagonists.

Sam Querrey
John Isner 3/1
The 6′ 10″ ace-machine won the title in 2013, however that was the only one of his ten titles that he has won on a clay-court title. Arrives here as the highest-ranked player in the field at 13, and is impossible to dismiss.

Feliciano Lopez 6/1
The world number 23 is better known as a grass-court and hard-court player, and has yet to claim a title on clay. Also getting on a bit now.

Jack Sock 7/1
Young American who made rapid strides last year, and has now climbed to 24 in the world. Last year’s success remains his only title so far though, and defending his first title could be a hard thing to do with the added pressure of the extra press interviews he’ll have to do this week.

Sam Querrey 12/1
Yet to get his hands on the trophy, but was runner-up in both 2010 and 2015. He’s also in the opposite half of the draw to Isner, and has a good record against the top-seed should they meet in the final.

Steve Johnson 12/1
Looked likely to get his hands on his first title when showing improved form at the end of last year, but hasn’t started the season in the same form so far.

Benoit Paire 22/1
The second highest ranked player in the field, yet seems to have been dismissed by the bookies. Only title came on clay though.

No player has won this twice in recent years accept the top-class Any Roddick, and it may be worth taking a chance on an American who look over-priced in Sam Querrey. Benoit Paire was also tempting, but isn’t American.
