ATP Atlanta Tennis Preview And Tip

The ATP Atlanta, also known as the Atlanta Tennis Championships, is an ATP World Tour 250 Series event played on the hard-courts of the Atlanta Athletic Club.

American players have a fantastic record in the men singles, winning the last 7 renewals, and 11 of the last 13, though it’s worth pointing out that the tournament has only been played at its present venue since 2012.

That inaugural event was won by Andy Roddick, but it big-serving American John Isner who has dominated the event since then, rattling-up a hat-trick of titles in 2013, 2014 and 2015. Isner’s motivation to win this event was also clear to see before the venue switch, as he was also runner-up in 2010 and 2011.

Indeed, it’s very hard to oppose Isner in his bid for a four-timer this week, and here’s why.

First Quarter

Isner may have to play one of the best unseeded players in his opening match in the shape of Adrian Mannarino, but he has an excellent record against him having won 5 of their 6 matches, and all 3 matches they’ve played on hard-courts. Isner is then seeded to meet fellow American Taylor Fritz in the quarter-final. The two may not have met previously, but Fritz should pose little threat having lost 6 of his last 7 matches, including his latest defeat against another big-server in Ivo Karlovic.

Second Quarter

The second quarter should boil down to a quarter-final between Kevin Anderson and Donald Young, and it’s a quarter-final that is fancied to go to Young. He actually trails Anderson 5-6 in their head-to-heads, but is fancied to make it 3 wins from their last 4 games should they clash.

Third Quarter

If the early matches go to the seeded players, then sixth seed Garcia-Lopez will play fourth seed Dolgopolov in the quarters, and it is the sixth seed who will be relishing the challenge having won their last 3 matches.

Fourth Quarter

Kyrgios, as always, will be an unknown factor, but he really should make it to the quarters where Verdasco is his most likely opponent. He’s also won their only match, and can make it to the semis.

Semis and Final

Isner will be happy if Young is his semi-final opponent, and that’s because he holds a 4-0 lead over him, all of which have been on hardcourts, and he’s only lost one set to him.

In the other semi, Kyrgios would be favourite to make it to the final, though they’ve never met before.

Either way, Isner should be up to the challenge, having won his last two against Garcia Lopez, and his only two matches against Krgios.
