2017 Barcelona Open Tennis Preview And Tip

Rafa Nadal recorded his tenth victory in the Monte Carlo Open on Sunday, and bids to repeat the feat in the Barcelona Open this week as the ATP Tour moves to the outdoor clay-courts of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona.

Nadal claimed the title from 2005 to 2009, from 2011 to 2013, and in 2016, making it 12 Spanish wins in 14-years. Spain have also provided 8 of the beaten-finalists in that time.

2017 Barcelona Open Betting

Rafa Nadal 1/1, Andy Murray 9/2, Dominic Thiem 10/1, David Goffin 20/1, Richard Gasquet 22/1, Alexander Zverev 25/1, Albert Ramos-Vinolas 40/1

Andy Murray is the number-one-seed, but the Brit has never featured here before. However, he’ll be desperate to find some clay-form before next month’s French open. He’s seeded to meet Feliciano Lopez in the last-16 and, as he holds a 10-0 head-to-head record against him, he should make the quarter-finals. However, he could meet last week’s conqueror Albert Ramos-Vinolas there, and the Spaniard may again have Murray’s measure.

Thiem could have the upper-hand in the second-quarter, where he should have few problems reaching the last-16. He’s then seeded to meet Gasquet or Carreno-Busta there, with another Spaniard Carreno-Busta his more likely opponent. Thiem leads Carreno-Busta 5-1 in head-to-heads though, so a semi-final is on the cards.

It could be an all-German last-16 clash between Alexander Zverev and Kohlschreiber, and the younger Zverev may have to bring his A-Game having lost both of his previous matches to his older adversary. However, neither will surely be able to cope with Nadal in the quarter-finals, if the third-seed turns-up in the same form as last-week.

David Goffin faces no one of the calibre of Novak Djokovic here but, despite beating the Serb last-week, the Belgian has lost his only previous match to likely last-16 opponent Pablo Cuevas. However, with Djokovic a late withdrawal, whoever wins that match should set-up a semi-final date with Nadal.

Semi-Finals And Final

The score between Ramos-Vinolas and Thiem stands at 1-1 but, with Spaniards having such a good record in the event, it’s hard not to side with Ramos-Vinolas, who looked in much the better form of the two last week, providing his final-thrashing at the hands of Nadal didn’t detract too much from the excellent tennis he produced to make the final. He looks a decent each-way bet at 40/1 to make the final from the top-half, however he is only likely to land the each-way money, as Nadal is simply too good if motivated to be at his best.
