Tattersall Stakes Preview
Published on 22/09/16
The Tattersall Stakes (Thursday 3.40, Newmarket) is a 7-furlong group-3 race for colts and geldings. It is named after Edmund Somerville Tattersall, the former senior partner of the bloodstock auctioneers Tattersalls, and was first run in 1977. It was granted group-3 status in 2000.
Of the trainers with runners this year, Aidan O’Brien has previously won the race twice (2000 and 2005), whilst Saeed Bin Suroor trained the winner of the 2014 renewal. Richard Hannon Snr also trained the winners in 2009, 2011 and 2012, and his son has a runner this year.
8 Runners are set to go to post for the 2016 Tattersalls Stakes.
All 5 starts over 7-furlongs, and maiden and nursey winner on third and fourth starts. However, only 6/7 in the group-3 Acomb Stakes at York last month.
Won his maiden over 6-furlongs on his second start, and looked likely to improve for a step-up in trip when third in a Turkish group-3 last time out. 2104 winning stable in the best form it’s been in all year, and may go close.
Looked potentially very useful in winning both his starts. Both runs were over today’s trip, the latter being a Listed Race. However, the runner-up has been beaten 12-lengths and 17-lengths on his next two starts.
Won on good-to-soft ground on his debut over 7-furlongs, and only beaten a head when third next time out to a horse completing a four-timer. Pulled hard that day, so could improve if he settles better.
Law And Order
Won his maiden at the second attempt over course and distance, making all to do so. Third has won a maiden since.
Only 9/15 on his turf debut, but has looked good on the all-weather when winning his next two starts. The 6-length runner-up in the first of those won his next race, so he could be useful, but the big question is whether he’ll repeat the form back on turf.
Made all to win his maiden at the second attempt, and second and third went on to fill the same positions on their next starts.
Aidan O’Brien often sends a horse to the English Group races to gauge the form, but this one could easily bag the prize after conforming the promise of his debut, by stepping-up to this trip to win next time out. Ryan Moore takes the reigns for the first time.
Tattersalls Stakes Summary
A typically tricky 2-year-old puzzle for the time of year, but the temptation is to take on Escobar as the form of his Listed win has taken some knocks. Meanwhile, the War Front Colt Whitecliffsofdover may prefer quicker ground, and the temptation is to take the two market-leaders on with both Larchmont Lad and Best Solution.
