Southwell Racecourse – Stupid, Greedy Or All Good?

So far this week in the UK we’ve seen Catterick and Leicester abandoned on Tuesday, all racing except Wolverhampton abandoned on Wednesday, all UK racing abandoned yesterday and today both Chelmsford and Lingfield abandoned.

However despite freezing rain, inches of snow and national travel chaos, risk to life warnings and treacherous conditions in the UK the team at Southwell Racecourse have given the go ahead for racing fans, trainers and jockeys to travel 100’s of miles for their schedules races today.

With seven races scheduled at Southwell starting from 1345 have Southwell made the correct decision or is this incredibly irresponsible?

Respected trainer Kim Bailey tweeted:

Grade 1 winning trainer Kerry Lee also tweeted:

With other Twitter users and racing fans quickly sharing their thoughts on the situation:

Not everyone is against the day going ahead however:

But we’re asking for your thoughts.

Personally I feel it would have made much more sense to abandon racing for the day. If racing does even continue to go ahead we’ll have stacks of non-runners and it’ll make for very poor quality racing.

Ludicrous decision to race at Southwell today and ridiculous quality of racing ie all weather bumpers. We all know that this is driven by greed from the bookmakers though. Anyone who travels in this weather potentially puts even more strain on the overstretched emergency services.

If there is a danger to life of spectators, jockeys and horses then meetings should be called off

I just been on the phone to Southwell from a punters point of view about the conditions and the size of the fields they just said everyone has their opinion so on that basis i won’t be going to Southwell again from a safety point of view

You can get more runners in one Irish race than all of today’s runners in 7 races. What a joke.

Should be called off for the safety of the jockeys and everyone else. Probably the worse racecourse in England anyway.
