Southampton take on Bournemouth in this week’s Premier League Friday night live match, mainly because neither team is playing in either the Champions League or the Europa League. But this South Coast derby has also produced its fair share of thrillers including when the score finished 3-3 at St Mary’s Stadium in April. Check out our latest stats, analysis, and free tips for Southampton vs Bournemouth.
Southampton v Bournemouth Analysis
20:00 Kick Off on 20th Sept
Much was expected of Southampton this season, especially after their improved performances after the appointment of Ralph Hassenhutl. But Saints were blown aside by Burnley in their opening game, then found Liverpool too good, despite Liverpool having looked jaded after their Super Cup victory over Chelsea.
Despite those opening setbacks, Southampton have found their feet quickly and away wins over Brighton and Sheffield United have sandwiched a useful point against Manchester United. Those results suggest they should be looking at a mid-table finish this season.
Bournemouth will have been disappointed to have dropped two points at home to Sheffield United but they hit back quickly with a win at Villa. They always lose to Man City, and there was no disgrace in losing away to a Leicester side that looks the best team outside of the big-six this season.
Eddie Howe would have been especially pleased to his Cherries beat Everton at home last week, especially as main striker Callum Wilson scored two and looks to be approaching full-power.
Southampton vs Bournemouth Head-To-Heads
Recent matches between Southampton and Bournemouth have been tight affairs, with four of the last five ending as draws (two at both grounds), whilst Southampton won the other 2-1 at St Marys. Two of the draws were 0-0, whilst one ended 1-1, and the other being the aforementioned 3-3 thriller at St Mary’s last season – suggesting the score-line may not be easy to predict.
There have been no prolific goalscorers in the last five matches, but the in-form Callum Wilson did score twice in last season’s 3-3 draw, whilst Joshua King has scored in two of his last four matches against Southampton.
The other interesting facts are Southampton scored first in both of their last two home games against Bournemouth, with both those goals coming in the first-half.
