2017 World Open Snooker Preview And Tip
The World Open started life as the Professional Players Tournament in 1982, and has been played under a variety of names since then, including The Grand Prix, The LG Cup, and the Haikou World Open. It was also left out of the World Snooker Calendar in both 2011 and 2015, before being moved to its current venue of Yushan in China for last year’s year renewal.
It’s a tournament that has been won by many of the world’s best snooker players, with Stephen Hendry claiming the title four-times and Steve Davis three. Indeed, it’s a tournament that has produced several multiple winners, with John Higgins claiming the last of his four titles in 2008, whilst Mark Williams has also won it three-times, and Neil Robertson won in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Meanwhile, Mark Allen is the most recent multiple winner after claiming back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013.
There’s no Ronnie O’Sullivan this year (won in 2004), whilst the other big name missing is Judd Trump after the Englishman surprisingly got knocked out in qualifying. However, with a first prize of around £150,000, it’s no surprise to see World Number One Mark Selby here for this ranking tournament. He’s yet to claim the title, but finished runner-up to Sean Murphy in 2014.
World Open Snooker Betting
Mark Selby 4/1, John Higgins 7/1, Ding Junhui 10/1, Barry Hawkins 14/1, Sean Murphy 16/1, Neil Robertson 18/1, Marco Fu 20/1, Mark Williams 25/1, Mark Allen 28/1
World Open Snooker Summary
Mark Selby has the obvious motivation of adding a title to his CV that he hasn’t previously won but, as his form this season so far is a long way short of the form he showed to last year’s World Championship, 4/1 isn’t for me this week. Meanwhile, whilst we know World Number Three John Higgins is in form after last week’s win, it’s asking a lot of the Scot to win back-to-back tournaments. Ding Junhui is also passed over with the added pressure of playing at home, whilst Barry Hawkins has yet to click into top gear this year. Sean Murphy has been playing well all season, but is another who had a busy week last week.
Therefore, as this tournament has a habit of throwing up multiple winners, it may be worth taking a chance on two players who have already claimed three Snooker World Open Titles, Neil Robertson and Mark Williams. Robertson has already won in Asia this year in the Hong Kong Masters, whilst Williams came back to form at the Six Red Tournament, and has the extra motivation of being ranked 17th in the world, and knows a win would get him into the elite top-16.
