2017 Six Red World Snooker Championship Predictions

The 2017 Six Red World Championship (September 4-9) has been part of the World Snooker Calendar since 2012 (also played under different names from 2008 to 2010). The event is held in Thailand, and Mark Davis claimed the 2012 and 2013 titles. Those victories where followed by wins for Stephen Maguire (2014), Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (2015) and Ding Junhui (2016).

The tournament derives its name from the fact that only six reds are used in each frame, rather than the normal 15, allowing for a speedy format that thrills the crowd. It’s not for everybody, as the absence of many of the world’s leading players suggests, but it provides a great opportunity for some of the lower-ranked players to win an event. Meanwhile, some of the local professionals get the chance to make a name for themselves, as Thepchaiya Un-Nooh did in 2015. The format sees 32 players split into 8 groups A to H, with 2 players qualifying from each group progressing to the next stage.

2017 Six Red World Snooker Championship Tips

The fact that a maximum-break requires players to pot just 18 balls rather the normal 36 means that anyone can win. However, with 4 of the 5 previous winners being well-known professionals, it may pay to concentrate on players who have shown previous tournament form. Favourite and defending champion Ding Junhui has an obvious chance on his world-ranking but, as he is likely to attract a lot of press this week, I’ll split my stake on Stuart Bingham and Ricky Walden, Bingham was runner-up to Ding last year, and was also runner-up in 2008. Meanwhile, Walden won the equivalent tournament in 2008, and finished runner-up in both 2010 and 2014.

Ricky Walden – each way @ 33/1 Black Type, WilliamHill, Unibet
